Morning everyone!

For some odd reason I am not getting the postings in my email from this thread since the change went into being. Anyone got any suggestions as to how I fix this? I missed like a whole lot of postings!

I think the egg drought is finally breaking! In the last 4 days I have gotten 3 eggs, which is more than what I have gotten IN TWO MONTHS! About time the girls started putting out again. I will say the molt was hard on them and they are now looking really, really good. Like all grown up hens good. They will be 2 in April. I hope they will continue ramping up production. I also found a silkie egg in the run this morning! At almost 9 months old, the girls are finally starting to lay! Now if I can just get them to lay inside the coop in the nest box, that would be cool. Little Man has been more assertive and challenging lately so I have had to put him in his place. He is much more respectful than Mumbles was and usually stops when I tell him to knock it off. I have not seen him trying to mount the girls in my presence so either he has been unsuccessful in his bids for some action or he doesnt do it when I am around (which is fine cause everything I read says he shouldnt anyways as I am the leader!). I am hoping that I can hatch some chicks this spring or summer.

Does anyone have any kefir grains they would be willing to share? I would like to make my own as it is mad expensive to buy in the store and they add sugar to most of the ones in the store. Let me know please.

I may be looking for some red star hatching eggs this spring as well. Let me know if anyone has any.

Try logging out and then logging back in. I had to do it 3 times and it finally worked....at least for today. LOL

There is a thread about the problem and the admin people have tech people working on the problem....it isn't just you, beleive me. But try above suggestion and see if it works (however if you use AOL it seems you are out of luck at the moment)

I wished that I knew you wanted a kefir grain. I would have brought one(or some little ones). Will you be coming north for any reason?

I always knew that eggs got a bad rap....I like mine hard boiled,but you know freshly laid eggs are ssooo hard to peel.

Fresh eggs can be peeled easily if you add a tablespoon of any kind of vinegar to the water when you boil them.

I have been doing that since I got chickens (or buy eggs that have a long expiration date indicating they are fresher than normal store eggs) and I eat a lot of egg salad in the summer.

There's a thread on here about getting nice hard boiled eggs even when they are laid the same day. I tried it and it worked like a charm.

Boil the water first, a good full boil and lower the eggs in with a spoon or ladle. Turn it down to a low boil/simmer for 10-12 minutes and then drain the pot and plunge the eggs into ice water. The two temperature shocks separate the membrane. I have the most luck peeling the rock hard silkie eggs by rolling them on the counter to fragment the whole shell and then carefully peeling out a "window". I peel under water so everything stays slippery and the shell separates almost in a single sheet. I used eggs from fresh laid to about a week old and they peeled perfectly.

I sit here snickering about being chased down by someone wielding a drill plucker! AAACK!

I now have 2 or 3 Chantecler girls thinking they are broody. They just starting laying a month ago.

Framac - I could pass along some hatching eggs to you to help you reach those numbers....

Glasshen - yup, those birds are nuts! Mine race to the edge of the fence and stop, I leave the gate open and they hesitate like there has been snow for more than 3 days this year before they go out.

Rancher--I hope my dh doesnt read that about the plucker because he would build one for the chickens and the deer and anything else he could get. Bear might be a bit difficult like your cow. You crack me up!

Ginny--not planning on it yet but come later in the spring I could. Things are changing at work so I might be getting more time off. Not that I want it but what can I do. I will let you know.

Got 2 more eggs from the girls so thats 5 in 4 days. Things are looking up! Still only 1 silkie egg but heck, at least i finally got one! Supposed to snow tonight. I am hoping it isnt much as my new snow tires are still in the trunk of the car! Guess i will have to put them on. Oh well. Stay warm
