NY chicken lover!!!!

The latest development here is that Mean Irene (who was only named a few days ago) will be going to live in Caz soon! She had three chances to live peacefully and attacked Stewpot with a vengeance each time. She doesn't get another chance here. And I can't at this point see myself dispatching her and serving her for dinner. A friend at ski patrol had a neighbor who will take her. What a nice young lady on the phone.

I hope that it works out well for everyone, I told her I would take Irene back if it didn't work, but I hope it does.

And the two little blonde chickies are adorable...so life is good! Thank you all for your support, it really helps.

That's so good you found her a new home..hopefully things will calm down at your place now!

I need to stop looking at all the hatching eggs for sale...jeez...I was telling Rancher a pole barn would be nice and have the individual coops in there for breeding pens and runs on the outside from there. Its amazing how fast you can get carried away with these guys. If you had told me 3 years ago I would've had 3 coops and another one in the thought process..I would've said you're crazy! I've got eggs in the bator and I just sent a paypal for more....gotta set up the other bator today for them...wow! LOL But..they're so pretty to watch run around the yard and I love the roosters! And of course the different colored eggs.

I do have one concern and I'm hoping maybe somebody on here can help. I've got a really nice RIR rooster who isn't a year old yet, that's kind of acting listless. There's no outward signs of an illness and he walks just fine, but just seems a bit off to me and isn't participating with the rest of the flock as he normally does. I did worm him again the other day and dropped a bit of poly visol on his tongue..I'm wondering if he isn't dehydrated? Maybe I ought to dropper some water on his tongue? I really, really hate to lose this boy as he is a heritage RIR and has the nice color and body type. I really wanted to find him some more girls and give them their own coop! Gosh...this chicken keeping can be so frustrating at times too.

Oh..and Queen...people can just be plain jackwagons sometimes!! Try not to let it get you down, at least you got to see your son!!

Framac, congrats on the hatch and to you too vm! The babies are absolutely adorable!! Yep, you can leave the plug out if you need to, sometimes I just take the plug turn it over and slide it over the hole to adjust that way if I need to. As long as the humidity is between 60-70 you should be good to go!

Vmdanielson-CR's are columbian rocks and rancher's been waiting some time to get them, so I'm very happy that his are pipping!!

Rancher-what's the morning update?? Are you glued to the window of that bator? LOL Did you get any sleep last night?? Come on, inquiring minds wanna know!!
Shesh!! I KNEW that...just lost it in my brain somewhere! Thanks

Love having you! I also come on to this thread first to ses what is going on with everyone else.

Rude people bother me. Really, you are getting a paycheck and if you work with the public and are a "bitter" person you should probably get a different job. I work at a school and some of the employees really don't like kids.

Anyway, today we are having DD's birthday party. Our whole family (5) plus 3 of her friends. Going to have lunch at Johnny Rockets in the mall then go see Journey 2. She is excited. We don't normally do birthday parties but she has only 3 friends coming, it's the size of our family that is cost prohibitive and we all like to go together.

We have just a dusting of snow, nice. Have a great day everyone!
Have fun and enjoy the family and friends!!

Queen - don't let it get to you. Perhaps she was having a bad day and something was bringing her down. I used to take a deep breath and say out loud, "shake it off". We all have down days now and then and it may have been hers. I try to not let them "hang" their bad mood on me and me pass it along as I go through my day. Or you could just shoot her and that will work to make you feel better too.

Just a little postal humor.

CR's are Columbian Rocks. I got eggs from a friend in GA. Not a common breed since they are white and not the "IN" breed. So far 3 have hatched and few more have started. I have 9 total so a few more to build on would be nice. So far 15 from 25. I'll give them til tomorrow night when I absolutely have to take them out. I may leave any still working, just cuz I'm to cheap and want to.

I will post pics.

Mad - Everyone here knows I used to work for the postal service so they don't mess with me. Tell your DH, some folks retire and sit, folks who have outside interests have a life. People call and say I called but you weren't home and I say "yes i was , I was outside working in the yard or doing dishes or what ever". or "Your right I wasn't home, I was out living my life". I've heard alot of old people say alot of things but I've never heard them say "I wish I'd work more overtime".

Just a dusting of snow today. Not big deal.

Take care, Love ya,

Rancher

Rancher I didn't know that you worked for the PO. I carried in Pittsfield Mass. DH till does!!

Hello,
I am a soon to be chicken owner (hopefully) about 5 miles east of Rochester, NY. I am looking for any input or information on breeds and coops from people around my area. I have looked at Many hatcheries and narrowed it down to Meyer in OH. I found a local hatchery in Macedon, but the timing for the breeds I am interested in won't work.
I plan to construct a chicken tractor for 8 or so pullets/ hens. We have 70 acres, but a Lot of predators, so I am not comfortable with free range (yet). We have registered pygmy goats and miniature donkeys and barn cats.
I am looking for good layers with the possibility of meat. Not crazy broody, cold hardy and docile/ friendly are pluses. I have narrowed it down to Americaunas/ Easter Eggers, Black Australorps, Speckled Sussex and Barred Plymouth Rocks. Would 2 of each be a good plan?
What vaccines should the chicks have or should get in the future? What about deworming and any other treatments?
Any more info, links, suggestions and possible local chicks would be great!
Thanks a bunch and can't wait to join in the love of these critters!

Well, it has been a hectic winter, but today I got a reminder that spring is just around the corner. I went out to feed the animals before work. Our Cayugas live with the goats and, as I was filling the hay bags, saw something odd. We have several pallets around for the goats to play on (including a couple that are leaning against the walls. Behind one of the pallets, I see a Cayuga egg. I lifted the pallet to look closer and there were three! Way to go girls!!

Awesome! Go girls go!
