If you go out to my run with a bread bag in hand, you instantly have groupies. Alan just chucks it all out of the bag at once. I subscribe to the "many little pieces" style of bread-tossing, though, as I like to fling bits as hard as I can just to watch them all run like mad after the pieces.

yes, many little pieces. I do fling some, but I have to admit, I like my Sumatra hens walking , on my feet to get the bread.

nothing wrong with being prepared! If they are right, you will need broody's however. Unless you got a little one that can run off of a battery and a solar panel. I have thought about doing that. Thinking about being prepared is always smart. That's why I'm building up the ""farm". When the economy takes another serious downturn, I've got food. food will be in demand. Small farms are the wave of the future!

I have a silkie who is less than a year old and has gone broody once already....I have Sumantras on order and I hear they go broody occationally....the incubator is just cuz I want to hatch more Ameruacanas and I can't wait for a hen to go broody.

And I agree, food will be an issue....so I have seeds stockpiled too...

that all this prep will go the way of Y2K and I will just have a life time supply of seeds and TP

I just ordered an itty bitty incubator. Lord help me. I don't need any more chicks, but I can't wait for a hen to go broody when I do need chicks, right?

With the set up I have here I can start hatching right after Christmas next year and have them ready to lay about the time it is warm enough to put them in the coop. LOL

when are you going to set eggs?? I ask becaues I am a part of a hatch-a-long for easter........... does anyone want to join in the fun????

I have a PSA for my local folks, stolen from our volunteer fire company's Facebook page. Nassau's Farm and Ag Committee (gotta love a town that has a farm committee!) is holding a small farm animal tailgate sale on Saturday, April 28, from 9 to 3 at the highway garage. This sounds both promising and tempting.

actually I don't think I'll get a bigger incubator....only have so much room and I will NOT build a larger coop. (Larger runs? SURE!! LOL)

I started with the chickens due to the 2012 EOW scare that has many in a frenzy. IF they are right I don't want to be totally unprepared. I am currently increasing my flock size due to time required to reach egg laying age....again, don't want to be unprepared. I figure I can barter eggs for things I might need if things turn ugly. If they don't and the world continues to spin, I'll eat the ones that piss me off and reduce my flock size to more managable levels. (I just ate Rowdy the Roo tonight. He was yummy)

2012 EOW scare?

Ray's new job is gonna be the death of me. He now gets up at 6 am and if he's up EVERYONE is awake and might as well get up too. It's 7:42 am and I have done EVERYTHING I need to do before work. Don't have to leave for 1/2 an hour yet. It's too cold to walk down and visit the chickens, so what do I do for 1/2 an hour? It's too cold to take the baby chicks out of the brooder even. Hurry up Spring, my flowers are already 6 inches high. (I think I started them too soon)

6 am isn't so bad-DH now has to get up at 3 if there is any chance of snow or ice. And, his foreman, who is great, gets up at 3 everyday anyway because he LIKES to! Then he wants to chat on the Nextel. Blah blah beep beep. Go to bed already! Incubator huh? I know where you can get hatching eggs, really close to your home. ;) Starting plants- _ am going to start Cauliflower from seed. When does everyone start theirs indoors. Tips? Selling 3 doz hatching eggs to a preschool today. Then I need to go buy feed. Have a great day!
