NY chicken lover!!!!

I never thought of the heat created by the auto tun cradle could raise the temp......but that is a good thought. I think that in the basement no cradle and lift one end then the other.

I use a turner also to turn my eggs before I incubate...but I leave the turner on a table..I don't place it inside the incubator. Why not just put the turner on a table or something and then when you've got enough eggs..transfer it to the incubator? Or be insane like myself and have 2 turners..lol! You know they're on sale during chick days at TSC!

I like the turners myself because I never remember to tilt the cartons..

My rooster is here! So - it's not an Araucana like I thought - He's an Ameraucana from his Duke University line. This fellow does not have a traditional pea comb or bearded/muffed, but I'm pleased with him. He's BEAUTIFUL and is going to make me some nice Easter Egger babies with my 10 girls. So far, one of my EE gals has taken a liking to him as well as my pardon'd Red Broiler. I can't wait to see what those chicks are going to look like. I have ten girls: 2 barred rocks, 1 white leghorn, 2 Easter Eggers (one that lays a more blue egg and the other an olive colored egg), 1 small Red Broiler, 1 Golden Comet, 1 Black Jersey Giant, 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte and 1 Mille Fleur D' Uccle.

I hear he's nice and gentle with his ladies. I've seen him mate two girls thus far and he did a good job. He's also very alert. I'm so happy! So what would you call that comb? A sort of pea comb? I'm told that he does indeed produce blue egg layers.

Edited to add: The more I read about Ameraucana standards - the more I realize that this dude is really a male EE. lol. Either way, I love him!!!!!

Good idea, but my incubator fit inside the auto turn cradle. The cradle is skeletal and there is nowhere to put the eggs w/o the incubator. It is a brinsea octogon. But thanks for the advice.

Tabatha and or Travis, feel free to butt in. The eggs are for you!!

I suppose I should introduce myself rather than silently stalking this thread. :) I live in Central NY and BYC was recommended by former HS classmate admhotel. I have 3 senior horses, 2 indoor cats, a 20 month old red-headed little girl and a husband that thinks I'm crazy all on 20 rolling (not flat) acres. Hubby is interested in getting chickens for eggs, I am also looking for temperment/personality, hardiness and overall quality. When I start talking breeds, I get the eye roll and reminded that they are 'just chickens'. Should have seen the look I got when I mentioned the August get-together...
Plan was to buy a small variety (9-15 pullet chicks) from Meyer's, but have now waited too long and first available order to get the mix of breeds I want is mid-June. New plan is go to TSC chick days and hope for the best when I pull them out of the bin. (625 chicks to be delivered to the Cortland TSC on 4/2). Or see what everyone has available here. :) My wish list is: Australorp, Orpington, Dominique, Sussex (speckled), Welsummer, Wyandotte (GL/SL), Ancona and some Easter Eggers. No coop yet, but with this wonderful weather, hope to get something started in the next few weeks. Until then, I have some spare space in the horse barn!

It doen't look like a pea comb to me. A pea comb has 3 ridges. He is handsome though!!

Welcome to the site and the thread!

It sounds like you have picked some great chickens. I was thinking it would have been nice to choose different kinds of chickens so I could tell who laid which egg. It's all a guess at the moment. I have 2 barred rock, 3rhode island reds and two buff Orpington chicks. The hatchery I got them at is in Seneca Falls. They are organic, and certified, web site is ajfarmsdomaniranch.com. But there are great people around here on this thread who may have just what you want.

I am just a bit north of Cortland in La Fayette. There is a TSC in E Syracuse too, you could call and see what they have, I am afraid to go and see something adorable there.

Good luck finding chicks and building the coop. Go big on that, cause it seems that however many chickens you have is never enough.

Everyone has chicks. Even I have chicks....but none extra in my brooder. (empty freezer, full brooder) How far are you willing to drive to get the chicks/chickens? Personally I draw the line at 1 hour each way.....after driving 3+ hours to find out the chicks were sick. Sigh. Fortunately I have an enabler a mere 12 miles from my house.
