NY chicken lover!!!!

ladylibra - congrats on the baby boy!

I am going to start raising meat rabbits this year.

Remains to be seen how the kids react to eating the meat.

BTW I have my first broody of the season, a Buff Orpington, sitting on 14 eggs, 9 are BO, the others are kinda test hatchings from my silkies and bantam favorelle. I don't plan to move her until the chicks hatch. Then I will probably set her/them up in their own little coop and run that I have used in the past as a grow out pen.

gotta check my calender, but would LOVE to come,,,just down the rd from us. I hatched out a baby boy, His name is Hunter. another redhead too.

Congratulations and welcome Hunter.

Oh, please come....it's not til August, surely your calendar isn't full already.

So glad I found a forum of chicken lovers in NY! I am currently living in Albany but will be moving to Syracuse end of June. Well, 20 minutes south of Syracuse actually. I plan on getting into the chicken hobby with my son when we move up there. Would like to start off with some Buff Orpingtons and possibly some Silkies. Maybe I can find someone more local with these breeds rather than having to order them from out state??

My kids LOVE rabbit and duck, partly the reason for raising them ourselves now, well, that and my whole self sufficiency thing too.

and welcome to the Enablers Are Us website! We will be more than happy to help you acquire large numbers of chickens. Remember, build big!!! There are quite a few chicken lovers around you who could probably help you out. Rancher may have some BO and some other breeds you might like. Ask and you shall receive!

Candling tomorrow to see how many silkie eggs are developing. I have 32 in the bator right now. The change to the cold weather required a slight change on my bator. Cold winds and temp drop means my heat is running. Nothing like hearing those dollar bills burning up.

Did surgery on my glw elanors foot yesterday. She has bumblefoot and I had to soak it in epsom salts and warm water to loosen the scab so I could get it off. My dd helped as I was holding elanor. She was a good hen, not much flapping or fussing. I know it hurt when we cleaned it out as she shuddered in my arms as my daughter was swabbing out the wound. At least it is all cleaned out, filled with neosporin and bandaged up. Elanor seemed okay and went back into the coop with her sisters. Bandage is still on and she was able to get around okay and up on the roost. I think she feels a bit better. I felt bad not having caught it before. I will have to do a foot check on everyone else to make sure there are no others. There is a good tutorial on this site with pics if anyone ever has to do it. Its definately a 2 person job though.

One week from today and my little fuzzybutts I ordered should be here! So excited! Spending tomorrow rearranging the downstairs and setting up the brooder box so everything is all set for the baby cheeps. Have to set up 2 areas as my silkies should be hatching a week after that. Babies, babies everywhere!!!

and the NY Thread. There are a LOT of people in the Syracuse area that post to this thread....not sure if they raise the breeds you are seeking, but I know there are back yard chicken raisers out there. Want to meet some of them? Click the link in my signature line and join the thread about the gathering we are having in Rome in August.

Welcome to the madness. Hope you don't have any addictions. Can't have that competing with the one your about to have when you get chickens. Please be aware as far as I know there is no treatment either, so once you in , your in.
