Happiness! The school chicks are starting to hatch! Three of six so far. Hopefully all girls, although I have a friend who will take a couple boys if needed. Mereks vaccine came today so will vaccinate tomorrow or friday. Anybody need 994 doses of Mereks vaccine?

Congrats!! My broody eggs from you are due sunday, keep your fingers crossed! =)

Greetings all:

I am curious as to how many people are shifting their poultry plan this year, and how are you doing it.

Last year I wanted to get some Orps, RIR, Amers(EE), and Jersey Giants. I was able to do that, and also added some BLRW.

After having them all for a year, I am shifting focus a little. I am going to order Giant eggs from numerous sources over the next few years (Incubator addition makes this possible) I have added Marans (At my wife's request), and I will probably eliminate the BLRW and RIR. I got rid of the EE's and got Amers, and moving forward will try to focus on the Giants, Amers, and Wheaten Marans. If I could convince my wife that I needed a second coop, then I could keep all, but it makes it hard trying to separate for hatching.

I have a horrible case of morehens disease and my wife helps keep it in check.

mine changes all the time. Added 2 IR ducks this year. hatching her eggs plus she is working on going broody. We are going to process nearly all roo's born this year. Just keep a few good ones for breeding. I have (off the top of my head) 44 new chicks I incubated this year. Figure 1/2 could be roo's. Lots of meat for the freezer.
also working on my Sumatra / barnyard mixes which are seperate from my purebred Sumatra's. For my egg laying flock. currently we have 15 large breed hens laying in our egg laying flock. Looking to at least double that with my incubating for the year. Plus mutts tend to be healthier birds than pure breeds or hatchery birds.
I need to build at least 3 more coops this year. Busy, busy busy!

Truer words were never spoken..I find all my barnyard mutts are fantastic layers, and very healthy, active birds. Maybe I ought to just create my own personal designer breed...lol! I have hatched out slw/delaware crosses..but the darned things all turned out to be roos. Oh well, got more eggs under 7 broody hens right now...ugh...I need the eggs girls, not chicks! I suppose I could pull the eggs, and throw them in the dog crate I use as a broody breaker..but I would miss seeing mama's and babies cruising the yard..lol!

These "new" designer dog breeds are only glorified mutts. That run a pretty penny. I say go for it. I know this is going to get me in trouble but I'm going to hit submit anyway
