NY chicken lover!!!!

These "new" designer dog breeds are only glorified mutts. That run a pretty penny. I say go for it. I know this is going to get me in trouble but I'm going to hit submit anyway

They're mutts with good PR professionals marketing their brands.

As for diversifying/modifying flocks, I could seriously get into ducks. I love the chooks dearly (and so do my egg customers), but the ducks rock. They're the funniest, most personable, most charming little things around, and I'm glad I got them!

I hear you! And I do good selling my duck eggs. I've said quite a few times "don't tell my chickens, but I think I prefer my ducks"

Hopefully in a month or a little more we will have more runners. Penelope is working on going broody. She say off and on all day today

Ooh, I'd be interested in some runners! I love the bowling pin stance!

I'll be incubating some more once she gets her broodiness done. I have some in the bator now. They might be all sold, but I can let you know if any are left!

I have pics of Patrick and Penelope on my Fb chicken page. Well all over here too

Tomorrow we are adding ducks... 2 white pekins (my friend bought 4 for a photo shoot and only wants to keep 2). I can't turn them down...

Can I raise them with my chicks??

I have a friend who houses his chickens and ducks together. If I ever hatch chicks and ducks at the same time I may just coop them together.

I knew you guys would be so helpful.

Hubby has been trying to tell me to take the day off and rest so this doesn't turn into full blow illness. Likely will anyways if I spend all day Saturday at the auction, then coop building on Sunday. But getting some extra sleep in the morning is sounding pretty good.
On another note, my old man pony isn't feeling his best. Rapid breathing, reduced water intake (he is normally a camel). Still eating grain and grass, but taking breaks to just breath. Got some Azipen from the vet tonight, hope that kicks whatever he has. Vet is booked for the next week, so this was the best option for now. Feel so bad giving him shots, at 33 there isn't much muscle left to aim the needle at. Then he moved away and had to stab him again. :( Hoping it is just something from the crazy weather, not something serious. I know he is old and currently looks like a neglect case (long shaggy hair shedding in handfuls), but still not ready to give up on him. Just need this weather to straighten out; once he gets on grass, he regains weight and looks good for his age.

Greetings all:

I am curious as to how many people are shifting their poultry plan this year, and how are you doing it.

Last year I wanted to get some Orps, RIR, Amers(EE), and Jersey Giants. I was able to do that, and also added some BLRW.

After having them all for a year, I am shifting focus a little. I am going to order Giant eggs from numerous sources over the next few years (Incubator addition makes this possible) I have added Marans (At my wife's request), and I will probably eliminate the BLRW and RIR. I got rid of the EE's and got Amers, and moving forward will try to focus on the Giants, Amers, and Wheaten Marans. If I could convince my wife that I needed a second coop, then I could keep all, but it makes it hard trying to separate for hatching.

I have a horrible case of morehens disease and my wife helps keep it in check.

Framac

I am trying to keep only egg/meat birds but its hard!!!!!!! I have javas and I am adding more this year, 2 buff orps roos and 1 hen, 1 EE hen and 2 roos from featherz! a pair a GL cochin chicks, 1 buff and 1 light brama hen chicks, 1 silke hen chick, brama eggs and silke eggs hatching on may 2nd! splash cochins, BR turkeys, narr turkeys and just got 3 muscovy ducks, 1 male, 2 hens!

Java--how many different lines of javas did you get? Granted, most come from the garfield line originally but I was wondering how many different breeders did you order from? I only ask because I am giving serious consideration to getting some next year. I really want some but want to have some diverse genes (as much as there can be in this breed) in the line that I get them from.

Featherz--good luck with the hatch!

Queen--what would you name your designer chickens?

the 6 dozen black eggs I just got came from monte bowen. I am also getting some mottle eggs from him later. I am waiting to hear from the guy in VT as he said that the eggs he was hatching on may 2nd has not been clamed yet, but he has not email me back so I hoping they are my chicks!!!!!!!!!!! his javas are garfield and Duane Urch. he has black and white so I am hoping to get both! the java hens I have now are from a hatchery in NM, not bad but carry both black and mottle in them and the black ones are good but the mottle that shows up is no good. I want to get some from HaTHOR but have not talked to her yet.

Stopped down to preview the auction items at the Broome County fairgrounds, for this weekend's Farm Bureau auction (find it on the Manassee Auction site). The place is packed with everything you never knew you needed! Equipment of every shape and size. They run 2-3 auctions at once, but still dont know how they are going to get through all of it. Auction starts tomorrow at 3 with 'small stuff' then livestock at 4. There is beef cattle and chickens, lots of chickens! I took pics on my iPod, in case anyone wants to see them. Royal Palm turkeys, peacocks, guinea hens, rabbits, some ducks, 1 naked neck roo and chickens of all breeds, including silkies and maybe frizzle? They also had boxes of chicks. Repeating to myself: I do not need more chickens, I do not need more chicks... But I think everyone else here does!

And they had some homemade layer cages/show cages? 2 big multi-cage units with individual feeders and cup waterers. Somewhere in that pile my dad had seen a couple waterers and long feeders, may try to get those if I can find them! And eyeing a small tractor w/ bucket. May need to stay home from work tomorrow to go to the auction. And I am getting a sore throat anyways. Honestly I am! See how I'm doing in the morning. I wish it was on sat and I had the money!

Sorry to hear your horse isn't feeling well. I wish my husband was book till next week although he makes time and goes in all hours of the night if an animal needs him. With this economy people aren't bringing their animals to the vet and if they do many are putting them down "cause they can't afford the surgeries . Its very sad. Sorry I'm being such a downer. I know your horse will be fine

What a great idea for a contest. Creating a designer chicken strictly fictitious of course.Name it and give an explanation its traits. My son is a horror writer so man could that breed be creepy.
