NY chicken lover!!!!

No ducks here Marq.

But I just dropped in to say that I had a big score at HD this afternoon. As you know I always say stop by and see what is in the "culled" lumber area. They did have some 1/2" plywood but what I wasn't sure what I'd use it for so I passed on that.

BUT what I didn't pass on was some "composite" lumber in dark brown. 48" long or thereabouts. and 11 1/4" wide. Not sure where I want to use it. Either the floor of the new hoop coop or for raised beds in my garden. 12 boards for about $12. Not to bad IMO.

Here are some pics of the new grow out coop. I've been saving the lattice for sometime not sure where or when I'd use it. It also was from HD culled lumber. I really appreciate that they do this as I'm retired and on a fixed income. Def. improves my quality of life in that it allows me to keep busy.

The crate was found on CL for $25. I cut the back out so the entire thing opens for easy cleaning. The white stuff is DE. I dusted the entire inside.

My parents are watching/spoiling my girls tonight so I'm enjoying some quite time. Just came in from collecting eggs and giving my horses some well deserved attention. The wind out there is nasty and cold. I think I'm going to stay in and be a bum with a cup of hot tea and a book.

It is tea and book weather! I would love to be doing that with no interruptions!

2 of my eggs under my broody hatched, got out of the nest box and died. No obvious injury, so the hens left them alone, they just got toooo cold and couldn't get back in the nest. I am SOOOO ****** I didn't take the nest box down yesterday....I thought about it, but they weren't supposed to hatch until SATURDAY, so I figured I could do it tonight. WRONG!!!

Next time, if they go broody in a hung nest box I am going to move it to the floor on lock down day, and not trust them to take 21 days to hatch. Sheesh. Can't they read a calendar?

(boohoo they were lavender ameraucana chicks too....not splits, but 100% Lav, I am soooo upset with me)

My condolences. It is so sad to have little ones die. I lost one in Feb under similar circumstances and felt terrible about it. I'm thinking this is why hens gather so many eggs to hatch, they know these things happen. But it's sad for us.

Ohhh, Tabs, they are so pretty. And you are so close. Must. Stop. Myself....No. Room! Really do want a couple of dark egg layers, but can't keep roos. Unless they whisper. We need to make a breed like that. Then I can hide lots of roos among my hens. :)

you know, you make a valid point, maybe we need to develope a breed who's rooster is slient when he crows, so anyone who wants a roo for thier ladies can have one.

sorry to hear that Cass. If it isn't already too late try this. It worked for me twice

Taker the cold dead stiff chick and warm it up. Twice I had what I thought was a dead chick "come back to life". If it is too late remember this for the next time. With chickens, it will happen again

Oh no!!! =( I am so sorry to hear that. I guess I should feel lucky that my broodies are on the ground, even though they are still in the popular nest boxes. I am just about to go check on them..

My chick that I pulled out 1.5 days early from the squashed egg is still hanging in there and seems to be gaining some strength.

Cass - you first. I am sorry for your trouble. I expect we've all had this happen. I know I have at least twice. One can never tell how a broody will deal with chicks. I had Dom. hen hatch two in the top box and all was fine. Others I've moved did not do so well.

Yes it is tea and book weather. DW , the best cook in the world has made a nice pot of stew. I'm waiting for DD to bring the loaf of bread. I do have recipe for bread and will try it soon since bread is three dollars a loaf.

Now I have to say that I've posted the SFH's up for sale but it seems one of the hens has started laying. I was going by the combs of these two but apparently they start when they feel like. I now have to get a nest box in there. This would be exactly twenty weeks.

Well I hear a car door, so it's dinner time.

So sorry that happened Cass!! We almost had that happen to this last time but something inside me told me to give it some water and warm it up on a heating pad and it came back. Wouldn't it be great if they hatched exactly at the 21st day and when we say they "should" hatch...
