NY chicken lover!!!!

Ok...how come the chicken god's hate me today?

I went down to the coop to check on the hatching of the last egg (which I forgot to do while down there) My rooster fell OFF THE ROOST. what the heck is HIS problem now?

AND??? I picked up the broody, cuz she's a sweetie and lets me do that and the surviving chick must not have been dry and was STUCK TO HER FEATHERS!!! If I hadn't gone down, she probably would have squished it in her sleep, cuz of where it was stuck.

I set all the eggs under the broody at the exact same time. No lag. Same time. ONE hasn't hatched. Someone tell me that they have had that happen to them and it might still hatch, even tho...oh wait, I don't know if it has a pip yet, ***I FORGOT TO CHECK***...you know, the reason I went down to the coop. SIGH!!!

I have an all day "in-service" tomorrow. One day weekend for me. Someone pass the wine, please. (and I don't drink, but I'm gonna start)

Let's see, I have a brooder of Silkies (Minus one Bad Kitty killed) plus four Ameraucanas from nests I had to stick in the incubator, Its a wonder anything hatched bc I had to open the darn thing A zillion times! Then I hatched 11 Quail that I was sure were not doing anything (Bad Kitty got one of those and almost set the house on fire) Would anyone like a worthless cat? He's totally sweet if you don't mind the destruction and carnage that follows him... and yeah, the chicks are in the basement behind a closed door. A closed door with a sign on it. And no one can close the door!

The Ameraucana hen I fought the coon for died. The broody Ameraucana is egg bound I have not a clue what to do for that. :( And I ran over one of the yard bunnies this am.

And now its too cold to move the Cream Legbars or the older Ameraucanas to the outside brooder. And I have boxes of bunnies all over the house bc they're my Convention breedings and its too cold outside.

I also have a duck and another Ameraucana sitting on eggs, they decided to sit on the eggs the day after it snowed.

you know, you make a valid point, maybe we need to develope a breed who's rooster is slient when he crows, so anyone who wants a roo for thier ladies can have one.

Has anyone heard of the breed Long Crower..you listen for the one who crows the longest and then breed with him..They can crow forever...ok the opposite of the above post..

That is almost a normal day for me! Sorry hope things look up..

Just posted this over on the broody hatchalong, but thought I would mention it here too since I am hatching Java's eggs =). Also got some cool chicken pics today. =)

Well, my broodies are due tomorrow and I *MAY* have saved a chick. Or maybe not. :) But the chick was a goner if I did nothing, so what the heck, right? :)

I opted to leave my broodies in place, as I did last year, although one thankfully went broody in a moveable box so I moved her out of the preferred nesting area. She still gets an extra egg in there now and then, but not 5 or 6 like before. Anyways, was in the coop today when my broody NN was out doing her 'constitutional' and another hen was sitting on the nest.. She runs in and starts up with the frantic broody cluck. I had headphones in so just figured she wanted her spot back until I heard cheeping. Peeked under the non broody on the nest and there's a half squashed egg in there with a chick in it. Argh! Momma was frantic and non broody just looked hungry (eep). Pulled squashed egg, put it in my sweatshirt, ran back to the house and stuck it in my incubator, which has just a few eggs in it as 'backup' in case my girls squash all their eggs. (grr).

Chick is weak but still peeping and moving. I left the shell on just in case the yolk was not absorbed but good news is almost no blood so I am hopeful that this very small egg was actually close to really hatching. I tried to move momma and eggs to a cat carrier but she wasn't having it so she's back on her regular nest. Wish my little squashy luck!

2 of my eggs under my broody hatched, got out of the nest box and died. No obvious injury, so the hens left them alone, they just got toooo cold and couldn't get back in the nest. I am SOOOO ****** I didn't take the nest box down yesterday....I thought about it, but they weren't supposed to hatch until SATURDAY, so I figured I could do it tonight. WRONG!!!

Next time, if they go broody in a hung nest box I am going to move it to the floor on lock down day, and not trust them to take 21 days to hatch. Sheesh. Can't they read a calendar?

(boohoo they were lavender ameraucana chicks too....not splits, but 100% Lav, I am soooo upset with me)

I an ssssooooo sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going out to check on my broodies soon, but for some good news, the little favorelle chick that was squished yesterday is sitting up and glaring at me from inside the brinsea! YAY. :)

Javagirl, I can't remember.. are the SF eggs you gave me pure or mixes? I don't care, just curious how they will feather out. The little squashy chick has five toes and feathered legs.

I hope something else hatches, I need two chicks. go chicks go! :)

Hey JG! Look at my poor squashed chick this morning.. Think she's better? :) She went from this:

To THIS!!

ETA: just went out to check the broodies and they each have one chick! My NN looks like she has a favorelle and not sure what the other one has - black and white chick. Just peeked for a sec. :)
