I am warming the just hatched, to see if they are "really and sincerely dead"....I hope one of them isn't, cuz otherwise I have a broody, not laying and raising ONE CHICK again. She's a good momma, I just blew it by putting off dropping the moveable nest box from the wall to the floor.
Now the one I found dead in the run, plucked of all feathers except it's wing feathers? That one is really and sincerely dead, without a doubt. It had "failure to thrive"....fully feathered and 1/2 the size of it's hatch mates. A while ago I SWORE I wasn't going to transport any more chicks....and that is exactly why....they get injured in transit, eat your food for 6 weeks and then DIE. I know they came from good stock, yadda yadda....Just put them in a box and drove over country roads with them sliding all over the box. Probably sustained a neck injury and just didn't make it.
So I had 32 chickens, minus one who just died, plus one that just hatched and 3 eggs to go. (2 in bator and one under the hen.... I am NOT going to make the mistake of throwing the egg out from under the broody til she abandons it) Maybe I am just not supposed to have more than 30 chickens, even if the roos are already booked for their time in freezer camp.
