NY chicken lover!!!!

I am warming the just hatched, to see if they are "really and sincerely dead"....I hope one of them isn't, cuz otherwise I have a broody, not laying and raising ONE CHICK again. She's a good momma, I just blew it by putting off dropping the moveable nest box from the wall to the floor.

Now the one I found dead in the run, plucked of all feathers except it's wing feathers? That one is really and sincerely dead, without a doubt. It had "failure to thrive"....fully feathered and 1/2 the size of it's hatch mates. A while ago I SWORE I wasn't going to transport any more chicks....and that is exactly why....they get injured in transit, eat your food for 6 weeks and then DIE. I know they came from good stock, yadda yadda....Just put them in a box and drove over country roads with them sliding all over the box. Probably sustained a neck injury and just didn't make it.

So I had 32 chickens, minus one who just died, plus one that just hatched and 3 eggs to go. (2 in bator and one under the hen.... I am NOT going to make the mistake of throwing the egg out from under the broody til she abandons it) Maybe I am just not supposed to have more than 30 chickens, even if the roos are already booked for their time in freezer camp.

Cass one of your 6 week old died? one of mine? Not that that matters. Or did I misunderstand your post?

last year I bought 11 hatchery chicks from a feed store. 3 died of heart attacks after laying a few eggs. Feeding them for 5 months then having them die really really sucks.

Grrr....lost the entire post...I hate computers.

Doesn't look like they are gonna warm up and start peeping. One is already in rigor.

And I forgot the rest of the post.....later folks...

Edited to add: No, it wasn't one of yours Stony....was one of Happyhensny's Chanties....probably the ONLY HEN in the bunch, with my luck. I'm really bummed right now. Wish I belonged to a gun club, I'd go shoot something right now.

really sorry. I really hate ( and that's a word I try not to use) losing chicks. I'd have you come over here to shoot stuff, but by the time you get here it will be dark . Maybe someone real close to you has newborn chicks. I'm hatching Sumatra's this weekend. If I get more than I need for my order I'll let you know if you are interested.

I lost several of my chantie chicks also. I think in my case they were trampled by the bigger chicks - mine were tiny. I did get three tho!

I am hatching this weekend also, although don't know if I'll get anything other than that poor squashed SF. If I have extras you are welcome to them!

Love that you buried the stallion in the mare pasture, he is a very happy boy now!
I ventured out to give him his morning shot (hubby isn't comfortable giving shots), and he was very insistent that he needed out of his stall. So I let him out in the aisle while I scraped his stall into one corner. Mind you he is 13.2 hands and has a 12x12 stall, so only uses half of it. So while I was scraping, sprinkling PDZ and added fresh sawdust, he was happily jogging up and down the 48' aisle. Then he decided he needed outside. Thinking he was going to quietly amble out and graze, I opened the gate. Nope, he takes off trotting all around the paddock, then into his pasture, then onto the back lawn (that we let him graze). He stops a moment, takes a couple nibbles of grass, then off trotting around again. Whinnies a couple times for the others to come join him. I went out to get him and called him, he went trotting up to the barn and around the paddock again. Closed the gate, grabbed some mane and dragged the idiot back into his stall. Then he stands there panting heavily because he can't breath and shaking from the exertion.

Great, he is going to give himself a heart attack. Watched him for awhile, the shaking and breathing calmed down. Did notice this morning that he is starting to get thin, white nasal discharge, so definitly a respritory infection of some sort and the Azipen should fix him. So when it is nice this weekend, he is getting tied out on the lawn to graze.

People are having all kinds of crazy allergy issues this year. Maybe he has developed an allergy. Good to hear he was well enough to trot around!

Cass, sorry to hear of your loss and your frustration.....
