*waves back* Welcome to the best thread on BYC! There are quite a few of us around you! I'm in the happenin' burg of East Nassau.

Welcome. Out in the middle of no where in Canaan. Not too far by country standards!
Hi my fellow New York chicken lovers.
I just discovered that one of my bantams is a roo :( He has begun to start crowing and shows obvious roo signs. He is about 6 weeks old now. I also have a Buff Orpington that I'm pretty sure is a roo, also about 6 weeks.

If anybody wants a roo, knows somebody who does or has any idea where I could find a good home for these boys can you please let me know?

Does anyone around me have an older hen for sale? I keep reading up on chicks and how long it takes before they start laying and mine won't be laying till fall it sounds like. I'd like to get an older hen if possible to keep with them. I'm in Albany during the week and up at my house in Tully on the weekends. My husband is doing a great job taking care of the chicks while I'm not there. I think he's getting attached! LOL
I'll sell you two. It's never a good idea to introduce a lone bird to an established flock. I have 2 of my original flock that I am not sure of their parentage cuz they were given to me. They are a year old next month.

HOWEVER I echo what others have said. You will have to keep them separate from your babies cuz no matter how kind the hen is, she will attack the little ones, cuz they are no longer day olds (whom she would mother) AND they eat different food than your babies...Layer feed instead of grower/finisher.

You might want to just buy some eating eggs from one of us until yours start to lay...cheaper in the long run, when you consider separate houseing (or putting up divider in coop), separate food and feeders, having to come up with nest boxes immediately and the possible loss of some of your current flock to hen aggession.

I know featherz, HappyHensny and I have eating eggs available. I am SURE there are others with eggs sitting in their fridge they will sell you, I am just not aware of them.

It's not so much the eggs that I am looking for, just more the experience I guess. But it sounds like I'll have to wait another 6 or so months. :-( Just thought it would be cool to have a couple of hens with my chicks, if I had known it's not a good idea to keep them together I would have started out with some pullets instead of chicks! LOL

What breed of chicken do you have? Mine started laying at about 5 months of age....if your chicks are 6 weeks old you only have to wait for another 3.5 months or August, possibly sooner. Rancher Hicks had a chicken start laying at 14 weeks of age.

X2 on all this. Great answer! Yep, I'd never throw an adult hen in with a bunch of chicks. I am sure it's worked for someone, but chances are good the hen(s) will attack the chick. Plus, you really should think about quarantining new arrivals, no matter who you get them from so you'd need separate housing anyways.

Your chicks will lay sooner than you think most likely, enjoy the ride! =) I've had chickens start at 16 weeks (hatchery leghorns).
