NY chicken lover!!!!

Good to know! Now I don't need a heat lamp, just some form of light in the coop right?
Yes, just light for minimum of 15 hours a day. Start beginning of September. When my coops have good windows, I just set my timers to come on at 3am & go off at 7am. But in the coops that are more inside the barn and darker, I leave them on the whole time. Usually 3am to 6 or 7pm or so.

Well, now here is another question...with the 3 I have being 6 weeks old, I eventually wanted to get a couple of more chicks, lavender orps and possibly BCMs. If I get any more chicks in the near future - should I try to get some pullets around the same age as mine? Or regardless of age should they still not be kept together? Make sense? Like if I get chicks in June or July, how would I eventually bring them in to the coop to live with the others?
Yes. You should try to get the extra chickens about the same ages, or you will have to keep them separate until the younger ones are big enough to fend for themselves in case the older chickens pick on them.

Thanks for the heads up! Wow, I'm glad I asked/brought it up. Guess I have to my change my plans a little bit.

Rancher: Where are you? We miss you! Gotta show ya the stream bed project with cherry bushes.

Have to re-do the old coop this summer - gonna see how well and inexpensively we can do it.

AQHA Chick: Welcome to BYC. Used to work with Show AQHA horses years ago. Great horses in any arena.

Henicillin: Your chicks are really cute!

Feathers: Hope your hen makes it. We really love hatchery production birds - they are so personable and lay so well.

My front yard is a quagmire again. About to go out in the rain and do more work on the streambed. Muck boots: check, Western hat: check, fashion statement of the year: check.

I actually wrote and got a call back from the Chicken Doctor (peter brown) today! Unfortunately I was (and still am) at work when he called. Wah!

He has helped several callers with internal laying chickens and I was hoping he could help. I am going to try his internal layer protocol since I see no egg and see what happens (essentially it's a forced molt - lower food and water and a dark cage). I wrote him back since I can't very well discuss my chicken while at work and maybe we'll talk tomorrow.

Yes, integrating chickens can be a pain in the tush. Sometimes you get lucky and it's easy, but it's definitely a better job if they are all the same size. I did integrate a bunch of 5 weekers with 15-16 week old pullets last year, but the littles stayed in a dog crate for weeks before I let them out. Just a few weeks back integrated some 12 weeks with some 6 weeks - same way, dog cage in the coop. They are different sizes, but some of the older ones are smaller than the younger ones so it all worked out.

(Are araucana hens always so teeny? my roo is going to crush those little girls :p I hope the new EE roo ("Q-tip" ) isn't as large).

Hey, it's the first day in two weeks that I haven't had to snag a lost chick out of the forest. Maybe my broodies are getting smarter? Nah.

Well more broody silkies I spread the eggs out that one was sitting on so each one has 2 eggs. One each hatched today so we have 3 chicks and 3 more on the way I hope! I love watching them with their mamas!

I have missed 10 pages since I have had time to get on here... I will have to read up later as its almost bedtime for the kiddos here.
