Raining here and nobody is happy because they arent out playing. I cant wait to move the terrorists out because they are dusting and stinking me out. I have so much cleaning to do downstairs that its going to take me forever to get it all! Hoping this weekend to fnish up and get them moved.

I have only one chick so far that has hatched. I pulled a partially zipped egg this morning and the chick was dead. I see no pips on any of the other eggs. This is horribly upsetting as I was hoping for a good hatch from my own eggs. My broody silkie is still sitting on her 2 eggs and they should be hatching soon. If the other eggs in the bator dont hatch by wednesday, do I wait till then before slipping this chick under my broody and hope she will take it or should I do it now? Will it mess her up with the eggs under her? I am a horrible hatcher and feel so bad for the lone chick. I hope my broody is better. If she is, I will let her do all the work from now on. This is killing me. Tell me what to do my friends. I find this very distressing.

i dont think it is a good idea to put the chick under her with eggs... she will either abandon the eggs.. or abandon the chicks....

Gladys had the Peeps out in the run today, all sitting on the big branches I keep in there as daytime roosting spots. They were hilarious - they were squabbling over the best positions until Mama broke it up. She's an excellent mother.

Also, one of my female ducks apparently dislikes it when the roos crow, as she quacks really loudly every time one of the boys sounds off. You'll hear a "COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO!" followed almost immediately by "QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK!" Man, is it noisy.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this announcement, but here goes;

Our 4H club "the Country Homesteaders" is finally getting off the ground and looking for new members! Anyone interested in chickens, ducks, rabbits, gardening, bees, trees, arts and crafts and, well just about any small homesteady type things are welcome to come check us out and see if its something the kids would want to join. At our next meeting (date tba) we will be discussing poultry anatomy and hopefully planning our trip to the Oneida County fair to allow the kids to get a look at some 4H projects. We had a great weekend! DH wanted to know what I wanted for Mother's Day and I told him a house for the ducks. GUESS WHAT I GOT?????? That's right! A fabulous upcycled Duck House! Total cost: $25 for hardware. We used tin roofing and recycled some old decking. Whoot! The ducklings spent their first night in their new digs on Sunday. They are settling in now and seemingly love it! I love that they are not in my cellar anymore!

The duck door is open to see the inside. The lid is hinged for ease of cleaning, etc.

How close are the broody's eggs to hatching?

I have had broody's sit on eggs for 3 days after the first chick hatched, cuz as you know chicks don't need to eat or drink for those 3 days. After 3 days she abandoned the egg that remained.

Personally? I would put the chick under the broody, since raising a lone chick is very very noisy. Let nature take it's course. HOWEVER I would make sure that the broody was at ground level so she could concievably do both...take her chick to food (cuz broodies do get up once or twice a day anyway) AND sit on the eggs for enough of the day to hatch them.

I put 3 chicks under my broody which were already 2 days old and she still waited 3 days to take them to food. Poor babies. But it was right there under the laundry basket with them, so they may have ventured out to eat before she offically instructed them how to do it. They are doing wonderful....growing like weeds and I put them under her during the DAYLIGHT and stole her eggs at the same time. (NOT the recommended method of adding chicks. After dark is how it SHOULD be done, but I am sooo impatient)

Have you checked the fertility of the eggs in the bator? Is the broody sitting on the same kind/breed of eggs? She may not hatch any either, if your fertility is low, so giving her the bator hatched chick may be the only way to break her broodiness. (I once had a hen broody for almost 2 months, til I finally got her some chicks)

Morning all. No pips and no cheeping from the eggs.

To answer your questions Cass...My broody hen is a silkie and it is her and her sisters eggs that I collected and put in the incubator. Of the 13 I put in, 9 were fertile and continued to develop fine up till lockdown. One has hatched. The one that started to zip quit and i pulled it yesterday and opened it and it was dead. Not sure why. My broody started sitting about 3 days after I started incubating on two eggs. I candled them a few days ago and they also looked good. I figure they are close to hatching. I will go out later and check them again. Hopefully she wont rip my arms off while I am doing so!!! I would like to give her the chick to raise as I already did the lone chick once and do not want to do it again. My other silkie babies are 5 weeks old and I wont put this one in with them as it will get crushed.

Stripe, my broody silkie, is in the silkie coop and thats where I will have her with the babies. I have some fencing to block off the door until they get bigger and can get down the ramp. Her sisters and Little Man spend all day in the covered run anyways and only come in to eat and to sleep at night. I think they are a little nervous around her because she is so fiercesome about her eggs! Sigh. If she does well at this hatching and raising business, I am retiring my incubator and letting her do the job. I cant face another bad hatch.

Oh look...its raining again. Kinda matches my mood.
