NY chicken lover!!!!

Creek. I do use a solar powered fencer. It does well all winter long, as long as I emeber to turn it off at night so it does not discharge when I don't need it, as long as I keep snow off the sun panel, as long as I have a fully functional battery doing the work. I have not bought anything else solor. Things are getting better and better. If you go solor keep me posted as I would like to know how it goes!

Also, your avatar has me intrigued. What is it?

Ginny
Thanks Ginny! My avatar is a picture of my daughter's cowgirl boots that were just sitting outside one day after her horse lesson. I took a picture of them and then used Photoshop to do a colored pencil of them.

I will keep you posted if I try the solar. I am very interested in it.

Reminder of the Poultry show at the Syracuse Fairgrounds Sunday, June 3rd. 9 to 3pm. approx.

There will be birds for sale at the show. Show entry is free. Also they have raffles & contests.

I'll have for sale, White Orpingtons, Coronation Susses, Lavendar Orpingtons and possibly a Marans or 2...

Look me up at the Marans Chicken Club, USA Egg show table, usually set up next to the center waterfowl area.
I am so glad to know about this! Thanks so much for posting!

If I was a member of the APA would I hear about these shows through them? I kind of live under a rock out here in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks guys! Yes, they are the plastic step in posts. I will use those for one run, since I didn't get the extenders yet and the metal tposts holding up that run I think will be too large. I'll go get the extenders today. The thing at TSC said you needed like three ground poles per fence, and at $15 each that would be almost an extra $100 (decided to set up two separate chargers). I am hoping that refers to a larger fencing area? I'll PM you if I have a question since I don't want to take up the whole thread. :P

ETA: OK, I was an idiot and tried to trap the fox. And who did I get? My resident neighborhood skunk. Ugh. So now I have to figure out how to let him loose without smelling skunky all day. I managed to go toss a tarp over the cage - he did spray but just got the tarp, thankfully. Have to let him out of there before it gets too hot, obviously. And no, don't want to kill him - we've lived in harmony for a while. Any other tips besides goggles and a raincoat? :)
Without proper grounding, your fencer will not work. It is important to ground.

So, did you get the skunk out of the trap without getting sprayed?

Oh we will definitely ground, my question was how many ground poles would we need to cover just a smallish wire run (we have two chargers and are planning to run at least two wires around each of the two coops, not around the entire field). So it will be a pretty small amount of space. Will have to measure today to see just how much.

And yes, I got the skunk out. Just approached verrrrrrrrrrrrrry slowly with a tarp, threw the tarp over, waited a bit, then propped the door open and ran for it. While wearing a raincoat and goggles. LOL! Good thing it was in my back fields so no one could see me. :)

What kind of soil will the ground rods be going into? rocky ground is not conducive to good grounding. If you have ,soil that retains moisture, that will promote grounding, and less ground rods., would be fine.

Not a single rock anywhere on my 26 acres. When the guy did the ground rod for our generator, he pushed the entire 8 feet down with his hand. :P We live on a swamp, essentially. :P

Just an update - the two chickens I have that ESCAPED from the fox (I lost two OE pullets, one 4 week old chick and my beautiful NN girl but two were attacked and lost only feathers) are doing fine. One was my young EE/AM rooster Q-tip - he is missing feathers but seems generally unharmed. Wasn't able to check all of him so hopefully I am correct. :P My HAC (HeartAttackChicken) is also doing well although she looks a lot thinner without all those feathers. I guess fat chickens do better against foxes since she is certainly no fighter..

RIP (same girl):
