Just had a job interview - if I get it, I'd be back to full time (yuk) but I'd only be about 10 minutes from home instead of having to drive to albany! (YAY). Takes a few months for the background check, tho, so I won't know anything for sure until then. =(

I'm a noob across the border in Little Meadows, Pa. I like this group as I at least know most of the towns, etc., where the posters are located, and I don't know most in the Pa. group (I'm from S.E Pa.). That being said, I hope I'm not intruding.

I know others have wrapped in plastic. IF you are going to it had better be REALLY well ventilated. Otherwise your chickens will get a respiratory disease and die. Youneed to ask yourself this. How did chickens survive for 10,000 years WITHOUT human help? Trust me, they know how to be chickens and will be fine. All we do by coddling them is make them weaker

Okay, so no sweating or babying of the chickens.

The snowdrifts here are BRUTAL, I may consider bring them into the barn.

The limping chick appears to be doing very well. It's in the coop with Lenore and the other two chicks, so it's getting around well and is able to negotiate the ramps. It's bright-eyed and bushy-tailed other than the whole "hopping on one foot" thing, and is now trying to put weight on its foot. I'm calling it Hopalong at the moment. Chickens are tough critters - I have the feeling that this one will be none the worse for wear within a couple of days. That JG is turning out to be an excellent mother. I'd entrust good hatching eggs to her with no qualms.

Happily, my clumsy BLRW is doing extremely well with her little brood of three. I still have her penned off from the others at the moment, but I'll probably let her out Saturday when I'm around all day to supervise. Captain Morgan is proving to be a top-notch daddy, and will help her defend the chicks. He was letting the three original Peeps sleep with him just before I rehomed them to my sister's coop, is Johnny-on-the-spot if he hears a chick peep in distress, and even tries to feed the little ones treats. He stood up to me this morning when I was trying to get a good look at the limping chick by placing himself between the baby and me and dropping both wings at me, but I don't hold that against him at all, as defending a chick is far different than challenging me for supremacy. I culled his brother in part because Rosco was exhibiting nasty behavior towards the chicks, so it's good to see that the Captain is much more parental. I did make him stand down by chasing him off, as he does need to keep in his chickeny little mind that I reign supreme in all matters including chick-handling, but I laid off him as soon as he backed off instead of stomping around after him for a few minutes as I would do otherwise. You're turning out to be a pretty good dude, Captain - we may have to keep you long-term after all.

Oh, I wish I had an unlimited bank account. I'd give these drawings a home in a minute. I had this book as a kid, and wanted chickens because of it.

I wonder whatever became of my copy. I had the paperback Dell Yearling version, and pretty much read it to death, so I'm sure it's long gone.

I agree with you about the rooster. The only time mine has flogged me was when we have had a lot of strangers(to him) around. Now I just make it a habit, when the "strangers" leave to go in the pen and carry him while I do chores. He also gets a little defensive with the young ones. The hens have their pecking order...the pullets and cockerels are not allowed to eat until all the Aunties have eaten. If a young chicken steps out of line a hen will peck at it just to say "Wait your turn, whippersnapper"! The younger bird will then run to Poppa and he will step in front and the pullet or cockerel will hide behind him. He is a good rooster!
