Sheesh! I go to work for a few hours and you guys blow up the thread! Lots of reading! I am certainly glad I am no where close (chuckle chuckle) to the number of chickens you have crazy4chicks! Although, if dh wouldnt kill me, I probably would have that many. Sigh. I need to win the lottery so I can buy a large secluded piece of land to have all the chickens I want and stay home to take care of them! Okay...glad that wore off.

Got home to muggy and hot outside and it was late so the kids and tots got no outdoor time. I feel bad cause I think they had a rough day with the heat. I shall have to rectify that tomorrow and maybe even give them a nice cool bath. My silkies dont mind a bath. Lots of grumbling outside but I think its just heat thunder. Hope we get some rain.

I keep telling DW that all of them aren't staying. Which is true but with broody hens they just keep coming. I think the two BR 's have finally broke and I've been saving Del eggs for them. I do need more Del hens.

I've got the orps on 20% chicks starter since the CR's are in with them now, but the eggs seem awfully small. The BR's are the same. My Dels lay bigger eggs. I suppose they are large sized eggs just look small compared to the Dels.

Dumor layer has come down but even free ranging they are eating alot. Now that I think of it the free ranging may be the reason for the small eggs. Of course it hot too.

I got stung tonight cuz the stupid wasps are building nests near the run door. I knocked one down the other day but now they have moved to the other run.

Has anyone deal with this before?

2 more broody's. That's 14 or 15 this year so far. I have to look it up it has been so many

I have to get pictures of the Runner duck "babies". They are pretty much as big as Penelope.

Pharmachickmom: Nice thought about all the secluded land and taking care of chickens; however, more land means more areas to keep clear, a bigger garden, more places to keep all your junk you don't want to haul away etc. etc. I dream about having a small house on a postage size piece of land with just a half dozen silkies to keep me company! The grass is always greener on the other side. K.....

Yup, the grass is greener. We have a secluded piece of property (30 acres), 10 of it cleared, the rest a local farmer hays. We have only a few birds, maybe 12, with 7 silkie chicks growing like weeds. DH and I were discussing a lotto win and he wants a ridiculously fast and expensive car, he asked what I wanted.....of course I said a nice morton horse barn with runs attached instead of horse paddocks and MORE SILKIES....maybe blacks. I already have Partridge, whites, and a couple blues. Shame on me for being so greedy.

Our children love the chickens, and so do I, in fact my youngest daughter's first word was "chicken". She is 1yr and now says " here chick chick chick"....so cute.

Hey everyone question time! Yesterday I found some of my Del hens looking a bit dirty and was like what the heck?? They are about 3 1/2 to 4 months old. Well last night when it was time to coop up for the night heard this terriable noise coming from inside coop and opened it up to see my roo also same age trying to breed one of the "dirty" girls and was like ok thought you guys where alittle young for this?? The girls have not started to lay yet will this do anything to them or make them come into egg laying any earlier? Have no idea all help would be appreciated!

Nah, I had 9-10 week old roos trying to have their way with the females that were about 16 weeks.. Only question is how many boys per girl? 4 months old is almost point of lay and the roo probably knows that. :) My older roos don't even bother if the combs aren't pink.

I have a 4 month old roo that doesn't even LOOK at the ladies yet /sigh. And he's so pretty too - his ladies are laying gorgeous blue infertile eggs.

Oh and peeps... Just found out in time for my birthday (monday) - I got the job! woo hoo!
