Would love those lol.. too hard for me to get delivered chicks tho. No one at home to get them.

we're in ausable chasm today for hubby's birthday!

Job starts in a month or so.. have to get credentialed first!

Sorry about the weird multi quote. .still out in a chasm..

I live up in Seneca County and have a local farmer who processes chickens for me. Are you on this side of Ithaca?
I'm in Cortland County and don't know of any poultry processors on this side of the lake. I hear that an Amish butcher may be moving up within the next year to my area. Next question would be if he would process poultry? There are so few that do, usually just the standard beef/venison. I may just ask my Amish neighbor to process a couple roos this fall for me.

Oh and peeps... Just found out in time for my birthday (monday) - I got the job! woo hoo!

Congratulations!!!

Pharmachickmom: Nice thought about all the secluded land and taking care of chickens; however, more land means more areas to keep clear, a bigger garden, more places to keep all your junk you don't want to haul away etc. etc. I dream about having a small house on a postage size piece of land with just a half dozen silkies to keep me company! The grass is always greener on the other side. K.....

We have a wooded area and I've no plans to clear any of it. I've just enough to deal with. I like the buffer between us and the neighbors.

Our bees are going crazy building comb. Both hives have pretty much filled their hive bodies, and were busily expanding their combs up into the empty boxes in which we had been putting their feeders. So, Alan had to cut back the excess comb in order to be able to put new supers on, giving us a nice little pile of honeycomb. The honey is fantastic. He only took one sting, and that was on a finger because he accidentally pinched a bee. These are really nice, non-aggressive bees - love them!

Ain't that the truth. We have 26 acres and thought it would be wonderful.. It IS, but it's also a constant battle to keep the forest from taking over what cleared land we have. I can't keep up with the weeds, the trees, etc.. :p

I'd suggest planting Evergreen trees. I've been weedwhacking some near area but don't intend to cut any trees down. In fact I wish I could afford some Evergreens to plant and fill things in. I'm about to post to the Managing your flock thread and page from my English garden magazine You might be interested in.

I tried this finding someone to process but it just never worked out. One reason being I just don't have room to deal with growing out roosters. Now I have to say I was at the Farmers Market with my SIL and he mentioned that chickens in the U.K don't have the meat on them that ours do here in the U.S. He was impressed by how much meat is on our chickens in the store.

Hmm.. trying to think of somewhere to go on my birthday (Monday). We're thinking of taking the north creek train ride - anyone tried that? Maybe tacking on a lake george cruise in the evening.. Anything else I'm missing? Think of something your 12 year old might like and I'd be interested.. (No wine tasting tours or sedate fancy dinners, think pizza and ice cream, zoos, hayrides LOL). I've been cruising google and haven't found too much. We were going to go to Hershey Park, but I decided I just didn't want to drive that far this year. :p

Any places that are like the Farrells we had in california? (giant ice cream monstrosity restaurants) or chocolate factories or something similar? :p No further than 2 hours from Saratoga tho.

We did ausable chasm yesterday for hubby's b-day and he loved it. Stuff like that is always good. :)
