NY chicken lover!!!!

Just came in from letting the girls out and cleaning up after them and putting out food. While in the coop I heard a terrible sound, and all the chickens ran to the back of the pen. A few minutes later it happened again. It was my beautiful Americauna pullet. Apparently I won't be getting any beautiful blue eggs any time soon. And I will need to have a new way to refer to my chickens. Yeah, the woman I got my last three chicks from and I sexed the chicks, carefully referring to a picture. Guess I won't consider putting that skill on my resume, as two out of three are roosters.

But I think they are both really nice, and the Americauna is huge and beautiful, er, aaaa, HANDSOME.

We have a wooded area and I've no plans to clear any of it. I've just enough to deal with. I like the buffer between us and the neighbors.
Same here. Got to keep those shooting lanes open! I like woods. Great for a nice walk as well as hunting. Anyone who has ever spent time in the woods can appreciate how it refreshes the soul.

Featherz--congrats on the job! Enjoy your birthday wherever you end up.

Dh let 7 of the reds out last night to freerange. One of the boys and 6 girls. They were thrilled and spent the evening getting into or onto everything...like teens let out to a party! The girls (aka my laying hens) didnt fuss too much about the intruders. They did chase them around a bit or out of an area they wanted to scratch in but for the most part, everyone behaved themselves. Pscho hen Betty made a point of chasing the pullets around but I think thats because she is the lowest in the pecking order of the hens so she finally had someone she could bully. No harm done as the teens are way faster than the girls! It was funny watching the cockeral as he reminded me of a 13 year old boy...all legs, gangly, not sure what to do with himself! Dh gave the reds a porterhouse bone to clean off and they were thrilled. Gladys came over and claimed it and I thought the cockeral was going to challenge her for it but he erred on the side of safety. He is as tall as she is but she outweighs him by several pounds. He thought about it though!

Elanor--my glw, has decided to go broody. Just finished with psyco betty and now this. I would give her eggs but I dont want any more chicks. She would make a good momma. Perhaps next spring if she goes broody, I will give her a couple of eggs from the reds. Of course this means I have to build a broody hut. And find a place to put it.

Had my test yesterday and it seems my gallbladder is non functioning. I could have told them that and saved myself the pain. Looks like a vacation for me coming up. Have to prepare everything ahead of time so taking care of the cheeps will be easy.

Have a good day everyone.

Hmm.. trying to think of somewhere to go on my birthday (Monday). We're thinking of taking the north creek train ride - anyone tried that? Maybe tacking on a lake george cruise in the evening.. Anything else I'm missing? Think of something your 12 year old might like and I'd be interested.. (No wine tasting tours or sedate fancy dinners, think pizza and ice cream, zoos, hayrides LOL). I've been cruising google and haven't found too much. We were going to go to Hershey Park, but I decided I just didn't want to drive that far this year. :p

Any places that are like the Farrells we had in california? (giant ice cream monstrosity restaurants) or chocolate factories or something similar? :p No further than 2 hours from Saratoga tho.

We did ausable chasm yesterday for hubby's b-day and he loved it. Stuff like that is always good. :)

Ben and Jerry's Factory Tour in VT? There is a WONDERFUL muesuem (sp) in VT too. Cripes what is the name of it. It's like 10 acres of buildings with all kinds of farm stuff, paddleboat on land, 50's house....Shelburne Mesuem in VT. Don't know how long the drive is from you, but it is WONDERFUL. (at least the 10 year old inside me thinks it is)

Howe Caverns?

Howe Caverns is right down the road from the Iroquois Museum, The Apple Barrel (good eats and country/craft stuff), The Carrot Barn (greenhouse/garden store and home of carrot cake), and Grapevine Farms (special coffees and desserts after lunch there and more country/craft stuff).

Good morning everyone, I have a couple of questions and I'm hoping you can help me out.... The little monsters are locked up in a run all day and then around 6 or so I like to let them out so they can free range a bit and just have somewhere new and exciting to explore. My worry is how far will they wander off? I always sit outside with them and keep an eye on them but I worry about them wandering into the woods or a little too far away.

So my questions really are will they actually be able to find the coop again? For the past few nights I essentially round them up and herd them back inside the run before their normal bedtime. They go inside on their own at about 8, so they know where ‘home’ is.

They are almost 4 months old.

Also is anyone going to the sale at the Schaghticoke fairgrounds this weekend?

Once you have established the boundaries you want them to stay in, they will be fine. They know where home is and will return there at bedtime. My girls always put themselves to bed at night. They will also run to the coop if it is nearby if they feel threatened. Occasionally you will have rebels that will have to push the boundaries but a simple correction reminds them where they need to be. Enjoy your time with them. I call it chicken therapy when I get home and let them out. Makes me feel better watching them.
