NY chicken lover!!!!

Just noticed there's Circus Smirkus in Saratoga on my birthday.. A circus, boat ride and lots of ice cream. Woot! Now that's a birthday. :p

Anyone going to schuylerville auction tonight? Wasn't planning on it but was pondering if my extra chicks were old enough to go there with this hot weather..

Hmm.. trying to think of somewhere to go on my birthday (Monday). We're thinking of taking the north creek train ride - anyone tried that? Maybe tacking on a lake george cruise in the evening.. Anything else I'm missing? Think of something your 12 year old might like and I'd be interested.. (No wine tasting tours or sedate fancy dinners, think pizza and ice cream, zoos, hayrides LOL). I've been cruising google and haven't found too much. We were going to go to Hershey Park, but I decided I just didn't want to drive that far this year. :p

Any places that are like the Farrells we had in california? (giant ice cream monstrosity restaurants) or chocolate factories or something similar? :p No further than 2 hours from Saratoga tho.

We did ausable chasm yesterday for hubby's b-day and he loved it. Stuff like that is always good. :)

in colonie center with a movie place next door!!! I want to go there for my birthday but have not yet!
Also is anyone going to the sale at the Schaghticoke fairgrounds this weekend?
I AM GOING AND i AM STILL NOT READY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will be selling birds, rabbits, plants and hatching eggs, chicken and rabbit stuff too!!!!
I found a home for my 2 EE hens and my RIR hen! Yay! My mother in law decided she wanted them for egg laying, I agreed as long as they didn't end up dinner. She agreed. She can't take my roo though, town ordinance. Does anyone need a EE roo? He's a good boy and watches over his hens, very sweet? I just don't know what I am going to do with him, I don't want him to end up on a dinner plate.

Is anybody here going to the Schaghticoke talegate sale tomorrow. If anybody is do you know who will be selling mottled and buff cochin bantam hens. I need them so much to continue my Mille Fleur Cochin. Here is my current roo Remington.

Morning all!

Laperian--I have 7 rir boys in with 19 pullets and yes, a couple of them are rapists as well. The girls are having none of it and scream loudly and manage to get away before anything actually happens. So far those two roos are the top contenders for freezer camp. The Survivor-chicken style game is due to end at the end of august or early september and I keep reminding the boys there can be only one. Okay, maybe two. So far I am lucky in that nobody kazoos (crows) until 5 or 5:30 and its only for a short time. I am so hoping it stays that way. My silkie roo doesnt crow till 630 and he only does it for 5 minutes. My terrorsts spend their days plotting ways of escaping their run and when a few are let out to freerange, they are into everything. My big girls (aka 2 yr old layers) usually show up to let the terrorists know who owns the joint and to put the beat down on the boys. Tbe terrorists are learning quick to avoid them.
I was awake at 4 again this morning, can't even blame it on the rooster because the AC was running in our bedroom window. Finally got up and let the chickies out at 5:45. They normally go out around 6, so most everyone was still on the roost. Enjoyed the quiet, cool morning air for a bit and watched the 3 roos that came out. Everyone else was getting breakfast or still waking up. One of the NH girls decided to venture out. She ran out like her tail was on fire to find a hiding spot and the boys went after her. EE jumped her, Orp bit her head, then GLW held her neck down with his foot. At that rate all the boys are going to meet the freezer except the 2 Anconas. They are little so have never have showed any aggression. Poor NH hid in the weeds for awhile, eventually came out and ran back for the coop. No wonder none of the girls wanted to come out this morning.
Getting all cloudy and rumbling here, hoping we get the rain.

Mine are beginning to wander further and further when I let them out. I have gotten to where I actually keep my silkies in the pen and give them some treats while my EE's and RIR free range. Instead of staying by the house and garden, they are going out into the field and closer to the woods. My daughter and I end up going to round them up and bring them back towards the house, we don't want any accidents.

I had a scare yesterday. I heard squawking and went to check and heard a hen sqauwking in the woods but my hearing isn't good so I couldn't tell the direction. The rooster freaked and attacked me without let up even though he usually backs down. I thought for sure something had gotten her and was way bummed. I got them all in the run even though it gets how. Hoop coops are good in the winter but hot has heck in the 90 degree weather. Well I was working in the yard and little while later she came wandering across the yard. So I shut her in too, but had to let them out later as it was just to hot.

I plan to build "hedge rows" around their part of the yard. If you have not seen my posting of them have a look. I have a small one build to separate my flocks of BR's and BM's. Both have roosters and I don't want them fighting. It won't keep preds away but it's just meant to divide the yard so the roosters can't get at each other.

I do hope to build ones that will block the chickens from wandering into the woods though.

Good for you. I have found kits (is that what they're called) two years in a row but nothing in the last few. I have a rabbit that hang around every year but no kits. I see him/her most nights when I close up the birds. He doesn't seem afraid of me but no Kits.
