NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi group,
Watch out - Tuesday's forecast high is 99 degrees in the Binghamton area.

Reading about the raccoons trying to break into coops, I think I will string wire, which will be connected to a fence charger, around the entire coop. I had been planning on just using 1/2 inch hardware cloth but maybe the charger is a better idea. Perhaps I'll do both as I already have the hardware cloth.

I took my girls (they turned 3 weeks old on Wednesday) outside for about 15 minutes when they were a week old, but yesterday I put them in the unfinished run/coop area for several hours. Used some blue tarp to block their escape routes. They had a ball...bugs, dirt, freedom, etc.

5 Delawares, 5 New Hampshires.

Someday I just might get a good picture of them, lol.

That might be a nice little side business. "Trapped a problem raccoon? Call Racc-Whackers - we'll do the dirty deed for you!"
Heh, I'd probably call if the price was reasonable! I had a look at the rate sheet for a local trapper the other day. He wants $450 for fox trapping - plus $50 extra PER FOX he actually traps. So that means I could pay $450 and have nothing get trapped? Yeek. And he also wants $150 to take away a trapped animal. Animal control is useless out here for those things too.

I used to use keyed padlocks on my coops, but then the lightbulb went off and now I use combination locks. No need to keep keys handy and if the raccoon can read the combination and open the lock, he probably deserves a chicken dinner. :p

Lynzi--if memory serves...there is a pic of your setup with a more secure undercage that someone posted on the coop forum. If I can find it, I will post the link. He had a similar coop and run and just made it a two story so it was more secure. I dont think it cost a whole lot either.

Hen--you had me rolling! Dh likes the name!

Kamir--nice looking girls. I am sure they were thrilled to be out doing real chicken stuff! If you have both the wire and electric, I would do both. You can never be overprotected when it comes to everything wanting a free chicken dinner!

We finally got a little rain. I cant believe the terrorists are out in the rain scratching about. When I try to spray them with the hose on mist, they run screaming to the underside of their coop to hide. You would think I was trying to kill them. Let some rain fall from the sky and they are out playing in it. Ungrateful wretches!!!

Mine too. We actually chase them out of the flower garden with the hose....but they are all out eating in the rain. Go figure....they must have bird brains.

Nope - it's because Bumbles bounce!

Thanks,
I'll try to scope it out.

So the locks are changed on he coop, went out to Lowes last night to pick up more dirt/mulch/plants, etc and ended up getting some heavy cement "bricks". I say bricks but they are about 3 times the size. Layed them around the outside edges of the run, went to let the chickens out this morning and I have to say. I think this raccoon is giving up. saw one small hole in the front and back about a 1/4 of the size he was digging before. There's no way he can move those bricks and digging under them is going to get him no where. So I think I have something good going here.

So Country Max is having a sale on wood shavings and I went to get some. Sale time is a good time to clean I suppose. Anyhow first day of sale and they were out of the Nobles 4.20 a bale. BUT they had the more expensive Basic for 4.70.

I am not liked at this particular CM for reasons I won't go into, but I got two of the Basic since I needed to clean. Then when I got home I called another not so nearby store about the Noble. I was told the truck broke down and it didn't come in but they could give me the 4.70 for the 4.20. I said I just left the other store and she didn't say that and she charged me the higher price. Is that a store policy or a corporate policy to sell the Basic for the same price as the Noble? He says, let me check with the manager. Well it was a corporate policy and if I came there they would give me the lower price. He also stated that the other store has a bad rep.

Anyhow today is the last day of the sale if you need some. I usually stock up and keep it in the enclosed run for later.

99* tomorrow? I'm not so sure since the paper said it might not happen. But air conditioners are selling like hot cakes here. Guess that's one good reason to raise the temp a few degrees. I can never understand why all three TV stations are a few degrees different from each other.

Have a nice day folks. I don't expect to get much done tomorrow if it gets that hot. At least not outside.
