NY chicken lover!!!!

Gotta question for you all.

I'm out doing my thing in the garden , watering and what not, and I see a rabbit come out of the woods cross the yard and then goes back into the woods. Not running mind you just hops out and I suppose coming to get water which is in a black cement mixing tub in the yard. I've seen him before just hopping through the yard like it's no body's business. What's up with that?

I always thought they were nocturnal. Saw two deer today and that's unusual as well. Scared the chickens til I went out and calmed them down. We no longer have cats here but the neighbor does and we don't have any dogs either so I suppose they've nothing to fear.
We live out in the country 20 mins south of Syracuse and we have rabbits in our yard all the time. At least 3 in the morning and 2 in the evening. They just hang out along the edges of our property, and even with my rowdy kids, they don't seem bothered, until one of the kids decides to go chasing after them of course. We have a momma and baby deer too the venture from my yard to my neighbors and I've seen the two down by the creek as well. But again, I'm out in the middle of no where so there are a ton of deer! LOL

. Same 4 me except I use 22 wmr.
Don't have a gun and never see them....

I'm not worried about the chickens. They will survive. I am worried about me. I think I am 10 pounds lighter and a couple inches shorter, cuz I am melting.

My broody that got attacked by the coon is still alive, swelling is down and she is moving around once in a while. But get this. She is SITTING AGAIN, on golf balls. What am I doing to do with her? I can't break her brood and she is sooooo thin, you can see her ribs through her feathers.

Edited to say: Ray has the solution to her broodiness. Give her a couple of eggs that the big broody is sitting on that are scheduled to hatch our first day back from vacation. Sometimes I rememeber why I love that man.
Poor thing, wants to be a mommy so badly.

Rabbits and Deer are not nocturnal. The both feed in the sunlight. And yes, there are a LOT of rabbits this year cuz of mild winter.

I most often kill them in the trap.I'd say 17 of the last 20 were killed that way. A few I have had in the yard 2 hours before sunset. Those I used a single shot 16 gauge on.Took out a gray fox last year the same way. After my best broody Mama let me know trouble was in the yard. I stalked within 25 yards of the fox and took it out. Gotta have the weaponry to keep the girls safe.

Killed another coon this am. .22 caliber lead poisoning between the eyes. A long in this case

we hardly have any rabbits this year. Very few. Too many predators though from the mild winter. Deer feed day and night. Rabbits at least in the fall and winter are most often seen before dusk feeding. That is the easiest time to hunt them. Otherwise you need to chase them out of their hiding spot.

I only see the one rabbit but did I mention the two deer that freaked out the chickens this am. We usually never see deer. Even with the woods. But then I don't usually look for rabbits or critters. I just go about my business and leave them alone if they leave me and mine alone.

Hi, everyone!! sorry I have not been on here!! it has been a crazy week for me! I got more new birds this weekend and have been getting my old coops fixed and ready for the birds! I was wondering if anyone here or knows who does in NY has not hatchery birds but full size breeder birds of for sale eggs/chicks/birds of the following breeds.......... salmon faverolles, speckled sussexs, barred rocks or dominiques or buff orps?? and I would love to find blue eggs layers of any breed, does not have to be breeder birds but is a plus!!!!! I will be going to a swap on aug 12th in sloanville, ny and would LOVE to add any of these breeds to my flock!!!! let me know what you have even if its not on my list, I may still want them!!!

I'm moving to your house. I have a whole family of them munching on my garden. Usually see 3 - 5 out on the lawn at any given time. Yesterday I pulled into my first client's driveway and there were 8 on her lawns. (no garden, just eating the clover on the lawn) Probably on our lawn cuz there are too many predators in the woods and the predators won't come out in the open in the daylight.

I killed my 9th coon this morning. I would much rather deal with bunnies.
