NY chicken lover!!!!

Just picked up some feed today. 200 pounds 2 months ago cost 38.00, today it was 47.00. I think I might have to downsize more than I would like to.

Where do most people get their feed. I get it at a feed mill in Vernon Center.

I just said that!! I bought 4 bags of feed yesterday..2 chick crumbles and 2 layer pellets...the chick feed is 19+ $ a bag!!!!! Thank goodness I stopped hatching a month ago! Im really downsizing this year, I have no choice;( Im still offering my BLRW trio up if anyone is interested? Kills me to do it :(

Ginny--not yet. I had a bag of feed in my car that I forgot to have dh take out so I lifted out a 50 pound bag not thinking. Needless to say, I have been paying since then. I'm not supposed to lift anything over 10 pounds and now I know why! Live and learn.

I was going to do the perp and his partner in today but its too hot to process. Hopefully saturday will be better. I am now getting 4 eggs a day from the terrorist coop. Wish the hens would take the hint and be more consistant. Sometimes i get 2 eggs from them and then other days I might get 5. Elanor is still sitting. So are the witches (I mean silkie girls!). Too bad. No hatching till March!!!!!!!! Still trying to get the boys to like the lone baby chick I have. Tried twice to put her in the coop with them but after a day or so they bully her terribly so she cries and hides in the corner of the run. I will have to wait till she is bigger. I am pretty sure now that she is a she.

Have to do some housekeeping in the coops this weekend. Thats what my nose tells me. Hoping its decent so I can get it done. Dh is anxious to finish the permanent run for the terrorists. He did fix up and old longhandled fishnet for me so I can catch the boys and lock them up for processing. Works good as he had to catch the escapee last night. We will get this rooster thing figured out one way or another. Eating Mr. Big on saturday. My crock pot should hold him nicely, along with some onions, carrots and potatoes.

My goofy ducks finally realized that they can get in their pool today, so the water bowls are sort of safe now.

It only took them six days to figure that out.

California whites are supposed to be sex linked also, but only as far as feather sexing goes. I did notice that a few chicks had long hard feathers almost right out of the egg (like at one day). From what I can tell, those are probably the girls. Since they are part leghorn, I am sure I will be able to tell soon. Only have a few chicks, but that's just as well - my coops are full.

I'll rehome the little guys along with the little guys from my last broody hatch.
a neighbor of mine has California whites. if I get another LF broody, I may get a dozen from her

Heh, probably the same byc member I got mine from (Rebel) - she has offered to replace my eggs, but I don't trust my PO to get them here in one piece. I think they drop kicked them all the way to saratoga! It's too far for me to drive or I'd go out there and pick them up. Never had broken eggs before, but the other times I have ordered eggs from NY people, those seem to have the worst hatch rates no matter how well packaged.

Maybe they just transport those in a really bumpy truck since it's so close? Had great hatch rates from Texas and Maine!! :p

Here is momma and 'her' babies.. :)

One of my lady ducks will be laying any time now. She's following her drake around soliciting his attentions, and Alan found her sitting on a brown chicken egg on the floor of the coop (I have rebels who refuse to use nest boxes). Go, little girl, go!

I'm actually a bit further, near glens falls.. so probably 1.5-2 hours minimum. I do go to albany for work tho - but that drive is killing me! (can't wait till my new job starts)..

we are only 40 minutes from Albany. We like to camp at Lake Moreau. Not too far from you I suspect

I need to get more DE, a 50 pound sack. Anyone know of a local place (glens falls to albany) that sells it or must I mail order it again? (not buying the itty bitty things they have at TSC for silly prices LOL). Mail order is around $50 with shipping. Finally used up the last sack I bought over two years ago. :)
