NY chicken lover!!!!

Sorry if I am diverting from the exact topic, but since you are near Ithaca, I thought you could help. My husband usually buys layer chicken feed in southern NJ, but it is still about 1.5 hrs away. He will be driving to Ithaca this week from NJ to drop my son off at Cornell, and we were wondering if there are any good places to purchase layer feed in the area. I saw a post about a place in New Berlin, NY. We are looking for 50 lb bags, and I think he said they are 16 percent protein (as you can tell, I don't do the purchases for the hens). Thanks so much!

OK, I buy mine at Red Barn in Middletown,NY - It's $13.99 for a 50# bag of pellets from Cochecton Mills - now, that being said, Tractor Supply has Flock Raiser for $17.99 and Layene for I THINK $16.99. Not sure what else is paying, but that's what it goes for here.

I had a nifty little surprise just now. I went down to collect this afternoon's eggs (my ladies take their time laying), and found a pretty little greenish duck egg in one of the makeshift nests in the playroom, nestled among three chicken eggs. It's extremely cute and small, and very smooth. I did hear one of the duckeh hens in there raising a racket earlier today - she must be the party responsible. *sniff* My duckies are all grown up!

I know there is an Ithaca Agway, not sure what they would carry or prices. There is also a Tractor Supply Company, they are pretty standard in what is carried store to store, so could find the products online. I have a farmer friend just north of Ithaca in Lansing that has Black Oil Sunflower Seed (and corn, oats, buckwheat, veggies) that he grows and bags himself. Should be able to find something between Ithaca and Binghamton if you are traveling through that way.

Here is a feed store that is only about 15 or 20 minutes from Cornell's Campus. You could call them to see what types of feed thay have. It's not hard to get back to Route 79 from there either. Is your son a freshman? We had 2 daughters graduate from Cornell last year. Congrats!

Just so you know, there is no such thing as "dirverting from the exact topic", cuz we have no exact topic around here. Scroll back through that last few weeks and you will see us discussing gardens, prepping, winterizing, getting together, etc, etc, etc....so please feel free to post whatever your needs are. (Most recently we discussed water conservation measures when you have a well and how to tell how much water a well currently has....talk about diversion from "chicken talk" LOL)

So I started processing my naught silkie roos a couple of weeks ago and the first one took 3 hours (including the time to obsessively make sure I had everything needed to do it). The next one took two hours because the %@!&* fuzz they use for feathers was endless and attached like glue. Today I got two done and they took about an hour each because I had to get every bit of fuzz and hair off them to be happy.

Then I put my store bought chicken half in the broiler and when I pull it out to baste it notice it looks like a d--- porcupine with a bad haircut and wonder what I was thinking

Afraid to even contemplate doing the ducks. They went nuts hatching and I have 38 now. Anybody want some really pretty muscovies? I have brown, gray, and white that are pure muscovey and some really beautiful cayuga mutt/muscovy crosses that are black (with a blue/green sheen) and white that look like little penguins. Two or three are barred, some are spotted and striped, and one is solid chocolate. I seem to have stumbled on a sex link because all the white ones look like dainty little girls. They are all people friendly and healthy. PM if you are interested.

Well I'm up four Del chicks and expect more next week. I candled tonight and tossed the duds. I have a hen that hatched three but for some reason rejected them and pecked one real bad and it died. I added her other to with two who were only slightly older and they seem to be ok together.

I've four broody's on egg and a fifth who is giving me fits. I keep tossing her off the nest but she keeps getting back on.

I'm hoping for some more Amer/Ee's. I do have quite a few growing out but not yet ready to join the coop.

I may bring a hen or two to the Meet at the end of the month for the drawing if anyone here thinks they might be interested.

Last year we had a rooster and a rabbit. Everyone was pleased with their winnings....(well, except the father of the child who won the rabbit, but it did come with the cage and all)

Since it is a chinese auction, only those who are interested in the item put their tickets in the cup/bag for the item. Everyone wins that way. If you are going to bring an animal for the auction, it is best to let the group know, so anyone who might be interested in bidding on it brings a box or cage to bring the creature home in.
