NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a Mille Fluer D'uccle hen that follows one of the silkies hens around....including into the coop when the silkie is ready to lay. Once they are in the coop, the silkie screams until Mille leaves the coop, usually running full speed. Too funny!

I hope everyone had a great time today. I am sorry that I couldn't make it. Spent the day with my girls, kite flying, fishing, and we even played musical chickens. I caught a huge bass today...of course, nobody was around to see it. I did take a good hook to the finger though while removing it from the bass' mouth. I may actually need a tetanus shot tomorrow.

Big fish though!

no kidding. My black austrolop screams when she lays, for 10 minutes easily after she is done. Same if someone is in her way. And someone always is in the nest box she wants. As she never wants the empty box, just the occupied ones. I hunt 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile from the house and can hear her when she lays an egg. Hens are not quiet....

congrats on all the duckeh eggs. They are quite delicious aren't they?!

They're great! Much richer than chicken eggs - I can see why people love to bake with them.

Hi, I live in Markham Ontario, love to have chicken, but unfortunately can't in Markham, do you have any info. about legal issues of having chickens in backyard of Markham? Thanks.

Alas, I couldn't wrestle him into the frilly apron and bonnet, so he arrived at the party a naked drake (draked?).

I love the "hens are very quiet" line. Someone needs to tell my Marans about that. She goes on for ages at the top of her lungs whenever she lays. I also have a Brahma who yells her fool head off if another bird has the audacity to be in her favorite nest box when she wants to lay.
So he's here to give my ladies that kind of show huh?

You could check with your local town offices and see what the local zoning and regulations are concerning chickens.

Well we just introduced the ladies to their new friend. One is showing him a little tough love while the other runs (oops waddles) from him quacking the whole way. I think after some time they'll all settle down and be close friends. I tried telling the girls that the only way they'll get any little duckehs is if they are really nice to him. Right now they are not in the mood to listen.

We got our second egg today. I'm so glad I finally have a laying hen! Her eggs have been small so far so I'll wait until this weekend before making some for breakfast and trying them.

Hope everyone had a blast at the meetup yesterday. It was a beautiful day for it.

I've been contemplating adding another hen or two to my flock but right now my coop only holds 3 nestboxes, one per hen that I have. This may sound like a stupid question but will hens lay in each other's boxes? How does that work if you have more laying hens than nest boxes?

Lynzi, I have four nest boxes, and at the moment am getting a maximum of five eggs, hoping for ten in time. All the eggs are in two boxes. Someone explained that hens like to lay where they see another egg, because they figure that's a good place to put their egg. So, not to worry about each having her own. Also, since there is always a favorite box, mine truly seem to enjoy complaining that it is occupied. There can be three empty ones, but if their favorite is occupied, I can hear their disappointment for a long time.
