Buff Orps are doing great. Gina just loves them. It took a while, but they are part of the flock now - no more initiation picking. They are such pretty girls and when I look over next door the little flock is like a picture postcard, red, white, black, and gold. My extra golden cuckoo marans rooster moves in with them tomorrow. He is too pretty to eat and behaves well. If I can remember tomorrow I'll take pictures. So much to do with horse stuff and everything in the garden ripening at once. Too bad you can't build a chicken coop with summer squash like a log cabin.

I'm so glad to hear that! I have also decided to part with my NB partridge silkie pair, they are filling out nicely. I think that they are my best silkies right now, if they were bearded they would be staying put.

Ok folks, need some help here. Just went outside to here what all the squawking was about, right next to our rabbit hutch on the ground was a an egg. But not an egg inside a shell, it was actually a egg with a broken "skin". What is up with that?!? Could it have been my son's hen since she is the only one we've been getting eggs from? She already layed an egg for us today around 11am, the same time she does everyday. Or could it have been from one of the other hens. She was the only one around when we found it. All the others were under the porch.

DD never ordered a taxi from the hotel to the wedding for us(she said she was going to!) If I had known, I would have done it. There was no taxi to be had at 3:00 PM on a friday of Labor day weekend We ended up walking in wedding attire to the park. Because of the construction at ground zero, the gps was incorrect, and instead of a 20 minute walk it turned into a 40 minute run in in heels. My son's girlfriend ended up with 10 blisters on her feet. But eventually, we did make it. Thanks for asking.

it is just a shell less egg. I get at least one of those a year. Most often the shell is in a ball/pile under the shell less egg. I've had them mainly from the 4 and 5 year old hens .... either when they are starting to molt or when they start back up. No big deal at all. Weird yes but nothing to worry about

This is similar to what I am getting. This morning I found one regluar shelled egg and one thin shelled broken egg under the roost. Really girls? So hopefully this means they are moving closer to normal eggs. They are slowly gaining more shell and less empty balloon like.
Worked on the nest box again yesterday. Building the entire coop was easier than these nest boxes. Seem to be having mental blocks in basic math/capentry skills.

Got the roof and one more board cut and primed, primed the other side first thing this morning.

My coop is almost complete! I have to say, I am NEVER attempting this again. Thought I'd be able to build one myself, I had a plan in my head of what I wanted it to look like, thought everything would piece together smoothly. I'll tell ya, I would have much rather spent another $350 and ordered the same one I have. It may not be made of the best materials, but at least it looks nice. LOL I'll have to take pics tomorrow when I'm done painting the one I made all weekend. I cannot see this thing making it thru the winter. Which means not only will I be clearing some space in my shed for my bought coop, but now this one too.

I did say I'd come and help if you like.

Had 24 Muscovies and the last 4 silkie roosters processed today. Three nice young people with a mobile processing set-up drove into my yard and did the job. They came out nice and are resting in the fridge for a few days (the chickens, not the people). Kinda sad and one of the silkie hens is crying for her favorite roo. They were downing 2-4 bags of feed a week and had to be thinned down.

Finally the original plan comes together and the chicken flocks are being merged into one coop, ducks in the other.

Nice to see so many new folks on this thread and sorry I missed the get together. Sounds like you all had a good time. I lost my cute little mare to a broken leg about a month ago and was out horse shopping. Found a nice middle aged standardbred gelding that is getting too old to pull an Amish buggy. "Sparky" is a real sweetheart and behaved like a gentleman the third time someone was on his back (me).

Well you have to tell those with the mobile processor that there is a market for such a thing and I would plan for a visit if they ever plan to come this way.

I understand the thinning out, but it's a pain to feed a bird all year and then have it go for $1 at an auction.

I am sorry about your mare, it's something we never get used to. Losing a pet or in some cases a friend.
