NY chicken lover!!!!

Oh my! My new roo just went after my little girl! One thing I will not tolerate is a mean rooster!

She was no where near him or any hens, he literally walked over to her and acted aggresively. Grrr!
Oh please tell me that wasnt Sam! I will come up and kick his butt! He has never been mean here.

So excited. My two new silkie girls have arrived and they are beautiful. My boys are beside themselves with the new girls and are dancing and doing all kinds of antics to impress them. Nice to know the girls arent pushovers. They are ignoring them! I will post pics when they are recovered from their long journey. I am happy that I now have my to breeding pens and hopefully the spring will bring some gorgeous chicks.

Thinking about processing a couple of the hens. Psycho betty is broody again and she hasnt laid an egg in a long while. She is over two years old so she and her sisters are candidates for dinner. Except Elanor. She is a good broody and lays nice eggs so we are keeping her to hatch out some eggs from my rir in the spring. Everyone always asks me how I could eat a chicken I have named. I say what better way to honor an animal that I spent a lot of time, energy and money feeding and housing than by eating it once it was done laying. I grew up a farmers daughter. Its what we do.

I hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather. Got the coops cleaned out and ready for the winter to come. Now all I have to do is bag leaves and pine needles. Oh, going to gather some acorns soon and try my experiment. If it works, I will be gathering them as well.

Love the name! It is my mother's name and that about sums her up too!

What is the acorn experiment? Need more? I have these dumb squirrels who collect them in the yard...my son loves to collect little pails full of them...

Sally--I am going to collect them and crush them and feed them to my chickens to see if they eat them. If they do (because they cant peck them open), I will collect and store them for winter to supplement their feed. I will only collect ones not chewed on by squirrels and that show no worm signs either. It this works, I will be getting lots of exercise as well as some good feed for the cheeps. Its free and worth a shot. I have lots of oak trees around.

Poor Rancher! So much reading and so little time!

Opened the door on the kennel so the girls could step out if they wanted to. The boys went after them. The girls are back in the kennel, the boys disciplined and all is quiet. Guess this is going to take a few days. Arwin had no problem going in or going out. All the girls got along fine. Figures. Boys always gotta act like jerks. I keep telling them some dinner, a nice conversation, a nice walk and good things will happen.

I just can't keep up with all of this.

I know what you mean. I haven't been on in a couple of days and wow!

DH let out my buff brahma bantams on monday without thinking about it (habit). I usually let birds out when I get home from work so I can watch them. Shortly after I got home the dog barfed up bird pieces, feathers and all. I have no idea exactly what happened. I'm down to a trio now. I'm upset and relieved at the same time. The dead hen wasn't snuggles my first one. She's close to 3 and probably doesn't lay much but I love her bunches.

I think I've got a broody hen on my hands. I have some eggs that are due to hatch next week. Should I let her have a few? Honestly, I would like to open up some room in the incubator to put Isabel's eggs in. In the mean time, I am testing her dedication by putting a couple of wooden eggs under her.
