NY chicken lover!!!!

Sorry, Tabs.

That stinks.

I was never able to cure my Miss Bee of her bumblefoot. I wonder how much longer she'll be around. :(

I haven't seen a squirrel in a couple of days so they may have gone off to die. I hope so cuz if they get in the garage it will be hell. They make me real nervous. I'm stressing out as it is. Which is why I'm up at this hour. I've been up since 4:30.

That darn BR rooster came at me yesterday and I'm worried about DW while I'm gone. He hasn't done it in since I knocked him out but he apparently has forgotten. I've a chick coming up but can't be sure it's a full BR since there are two SLW hens in with the group or I'd get rid of him before I go. Ugh!

Thanks everyone. He was such a good boy and had such personality. This has been my one and only experience with bumblefoot.

ChickPrincess-- I hope your Miss Bee makes it and heals up well.
I am sorry to hear about your poor boy. =( I had a bad bumblefoot epidemic last year, but only in my leghorns. Seems their little skinny feet and habit of running across a hot gravel driveway kept getting them into trouble, but thankfully they healed up fine. I have one bumble girl now, but I am keeping an eye on it and it seems to be healing by itself (whew!)..

Oh brr! Who made me turn the heat on? Bleh. Had to go out and unfreeze the waterers - haven't changed over to the dog bowls yet because I have chicks in one coop.. Looks like rest of the week will be warmer, or so they say. :p

Morning all! It sure was bracing this morning going out to let the cheeps out. Especially in a nightgown, rubber boots and a light jacket. Makes you move a little faster.

Tab--sorry to hear of your loss. I have a hen downstairs in a crate right now that I have been treating her bumblefoot for the past 2 days or so. Elanor is a trooper and she seems to be healing with the treatments I am giving her. I think she secretly likes being in a warm house and getting treats and nice foot soaks.

Rancher--sounds like its time you remind your rooster who the head roo is again. I find that helps with my boys. Olaf started his nonsense again from his side of the fence and I stopped mid walk and flapped my arms and bawked at him. He ran away. I do keep the cockeral correction tool handy just in case he tries to push the issue.

Going to rake and bag pine needles and leaves today for the runs for winter. Lots of them have dropped on my road and that makes it easy to rake and bag. Still picking up acorns and freezing them as well. Have a good day everyone!

Ugh!! Just went out to take my cats to the free rabies shot clinic and the neighbors dogs had broken out and were harassing the chickens. THANKFULLY I had not let them out yet so no harm done, but those dogs have NEVER gotten out before - they have those shock collars and an electric fence and the collars were still on. Would the frost have something to do with letting them get through that fence? They are gone now, but I think my cats are doing to have to wait for their shots until the ballston spa clinic on tuesday. =(

Many people do not care for the upkeep with the fences including replacing the batteries in the collars....I have so many neighbors who trainer their dogs with the fence but figured the dog knows now and won't bother making sure the equipment still works. I've also known some dogs that test the fence regularly. Good luck with your neighbors dogs, hopefully it was just a slip up of some sort.

The one thing I've learned this week is that I don't trust my own dogs around the chickens....they are way too interested in the chicks and not in a good way.

That could be. I heard some yelling from the neighbors after I chased the dogs off my property so I *think* they are working on it. I'm going to take a walk a bit later and see what's up. The dogs will come after me if I walk by the house so I can see if they get past their fence. Put my DH on watch while I went to get the cats their shots. HUGE line today - guess it's getting close to the last free clinic and everyone's in a rush to get them in.
