NY chicken lover!!!!

Mama's babies are the cutest. Very adorable.

Ginny, if you were to shoot squirrels on your neighbor's land, yes, you should feel guilty. But if you shoot the squirrels on your land, no guilt is necessary. Especially if you do it so well! I am an expert on guilt, so am qualified to rule on this occasion. :D

Glass, I agree that if I was shooting this particular neighbor's squirrels I should feel guilty!! I really like this neighbor and she allows me about an acre of her property to pasture my horses. I do not shoot them on her property. She goes to bakeries and picks up bread tht can not be sold and puts it in containers and spreads it all over her lawn Wild life from all over come to eat of this white bread feast including the local bear. Then these wild animals have lots and lots of babies(think wood chucks[that go across the stone wall, dig holes in my pastures] and squirrels) that eat my chicken food. She is a great neighbor otherwise and I really like her. They enjoy the wild life that visit the white bread feeders. This is why I feel a bit guilty shooting the squirrels. They LOVE the squirrels and woodchucks and I feel guilty killing something they enjoy so much. If only the animals would stay on their property.............

It looks like another rainy day here in eastern NY. Have a great day everyone!!

I know that it is not so simple, and of course the squirrels don't stay only on her property. But that white bread feast sounds like they are inviting big problems, like coyotes and you mentioned bear. Those are serious wild animals that should not be trained to come close to homes. I was making light of a difficult situation. Here we periodically get reminders to keep trash well contained, and even to limit feeding birds etc as coyotes and I imagine foxes are opportunistic feeders, and will eat anything. Is there a wildlife control officer, or something similar, or publications which could be sent to them, to let them know the consequences for the whole area of their actions??? Not to get them in trouble, or cause problems between you and them, just to make them aware.?

Have been working toward the liming of the chicken pen. Had been getting about seven eggs a day. The first day I put the old fence in place, and there was a gap I didn't close up because I and a lll the chickens needed a way to get out. As I was putting up the fence I noticed that most of the chickens were in the area Iwas fencing in. That day I got only two eggs. Over the next few days they were spending lots of time there, it became the most popular corner. Last night I closed the gaps and put down the lime since it was to rain last night and today. This morning they came out and were complaining loudly that the good part of their yard was unavailable. Probably there will be no eggs for me today.

Intentional feeding of wildlife in this way (especially bear and deer!) is illegal in NY state. Maybe you can gently let her know? Tell her you are just concerned because congregated feeding areas tend to spread disease which can wipe out wildlife! Do a search on chronic wasting disease in deer, which is mostly transferred at congregated feeding areas. It's very sad.

Not to mention that bread-- especially white bread-- is an exceptionally bad diet for any creature!

Framac = I don't have a timer and sometimes would forget to turn it off. Plus I don't keep feed and water in the coops. Also I figure they deserve a rest.

Stony - got chicks runny around with two moms and they are moving farther and farther from the coop. Chicks can be stressful at this time of year.

Marq - Vernon is to far for me, even if I had chicken to do. If these CR's don't start laying by the time I get back from AL in Nov. I may do them myself.

Honestly I'm getting tired of chickens. I hate the cold weather more and more.

No worries Glass. I just needed you to know that I wasn't being disrespectful and shooting on her property.

NO ONE should be eating white bread! I am sure she "knows". And I could have far worse neighbors.

Nambroth you have a new avatar! I like it!!

depends on the mama Rancher. My girl "Mama" has earned her name. This isn't her 1st October hatch

. Others I would worry about. Mama kept 15 chicks in line most summer. I don't worry about her. Mama had her 2 day old chicks next door today at my moms house. Easily 100 yards from thier nest in the shed.

ugh, more rain! and a 60% chance for more tomorrow... my fiance and I got the enclosure completely covered with very nice, light weight, yet heavy duty vinyl, so it can rain I suppose... the gang is nice and dry and still have full access to the run and their bath. It did let up for about an hour this afternoon so we went out together for some grass and bugs. I was pleased that they all headed home without delay once it started raining again... thought I'd have to deal with at least one straggler... the 2 new boys are really starting to flock with the rest, for the most part, the older roo is cool with it, but I need to make a decision soon... if I can't find a home for him, I'm gonna have to eat him. he's a good boy, great with the girls, and with me... he's so sweet... but he doesn't have the EE features I want to breed into my future chicks. no beard or muffs, and my other two roos have awesome feather colors and all the goodies like beards and muffs and even feathered feet... my fiance is trying to keep me grounded and realistic about the situation... I need more time.
and I forgot about photo phriday... I'll try to get back later and post one... gotta download the camera
