NY chicken lover!!!!

I haven't seen the hawk around my place in quite a while. Do hawks go south for the winter?

As to treating for a breathing problem or mucus build up, you could turn on a hot shower and sit in the steam with the bird.

hawks migrate, but not red-tails... I didn't think of the steam thing...probably bc I don't have a shower, just a bath... that would definitely work in the short term... all of it sounds optimum

Yikes! Took awhile to catch up on 83 posts!
I visited our rental house today. They weren't exaggerating.

It's bad. Out of spite (I'm assuming) the idiots filled in the sump pump hole with gravel. REALLY??? Progress is being made to get it cleaned and fixed up again. We had partial covering from insurance. I think the adjuster felt sorry for us, but it helps a great deal.

I ordered nipple waterers tonight. I'm making the switch! Yay! Someone also said they use an aquarium heater to keep the water from freezing. They have used it for 4 years without issue. I'm going to try it in a 5 gallon pail.

Out of curiosity, how many chickens do each of us have? I always wonder that. Is there any way to create a chart? I have 39 at the moment.

This summer after hatching counting babies and all I had 237. As to right now I don't know for sure. I'll count and get back with the number later this morning.

Off the top of my head I count 91 that I can remember. We still have a silver ameraucana trio and 2 OE hens we would like to sell.

I have 61 right now, including two baby chicks and two roosters. I think I'll rehome 10 or so before 'winter' but waiting until the molters get their feathers back in so I don't send off scruffy already stressed chickens. My neighbor wants chickens, so once he processes his turkeys I may send some girls over to him - he has a very nice coop all set up, just needs to have no more turkeys in it. :)

What does that mean?
Rancher---we have a 3 inch drain pipe that runs from the back of the house to the front. The water from the rain tends to collect at the back of the house because of the grade of the land when the builder built the house. Most of the time, the drain works fine but when the rain comes down very very heavy and for a long period of time, the pipe cant handle it. During the hurricane last year our basement flooded, twice. We ended up buying a good size pump and hose so we could prevent flooding by pumping out the back before we hit flood stage. It doesnt happen often but after the mess last year, I never want it to happen again,

Has anyone found that they sell eggs better if they feed their hens no soy? I'm wondering if its worth it. I don't sell eggs hardly at all for eating, but was condiering it if the soy free thing was attractive to customers.
My egg customers don't seemed to be concerned with soy being fed to the chickens. But, if you did not fed soy, as found in most commercial chicken feeds, what would you feed? And if it were an animal protein source, how would that be preserved in a grain mixture?

No egg customers have ever asked about soy. They are just happy to be buying eggs from chickens that can actually ACT like a chicken. I have people pull off to the side of the road to watch the flock (they are in full view from the road). I'm somewhat out in the country, but people still seem to enjoy it.
Someone asked about egg prices (sorry, I don't remember who). I get $2.50 a dozen and NO ONE has questioned that price.

Yes we are interested in your Blue Silkies. We recently lost 3 of our
Silkies to HAWK attack.

Please give us more details. Thanks, Regards, Aria
