NY chicken lover!!!!

.Tab, I would not take the word of a local doctor about your brother. Have him go to a bigger city, even Syracuse if he is local...Don't let him give up....
He's not giving up, but it is looking bad. He's been down to see a doctor in NYC at Sloan and Kettering (i may have spelled that wrong) a few times over the past year. They were supposed to have called him 3 weeks ago. Now there is probably an issue because of sandy. He's pretty much out of treatment options and is hoping for a clinical trial. It's very frustrating. You would think in this day and age with technology that people could communicate better!

Silly alarm went off an hour early. I use my cell phone as an alarm and it automatically switches the time for daylight savings. I figured since the alarm is something I set it would leave it at 2am. I was wrong so now I have a few minutes before leaving for work. I am going to be tired later.

up at 2 or worse...1?? I hope you have a good day today tab and get a good nigh't sleep tonight.

Morning all! Spent my birthday yesterday cleaning, doing laundry, raking and bagging leaves for winter use in the runs, supervising silkie freerange time and moving the hens coop to its winter location. We had to herd them towards the new location as they kept running back to where it used to be when it was getting dark. Silly girls. Dh took me out to dinner at the Texas Roadhouse and it was fabulous as usual. We were like bears and came home to sleep off our food coma. Best part is leftovers for lunch!

Sunny but cold today. Everyone keeps talking about the coming noreaster. Hoping that it doesnt materialize. Have to get some shower curtain liners and get them up on the skirting of the hens coop and on the one silkie coop. Works well as a wind block.

Tab--thoughts and prayers are with you. I can empathize with how you are feeling.

it's been a while since i really checked in and caught up on all the posts...

Happy belated brithday pharm! sounds like a busy day, but a very pleasant and relaxing end! when I've eaten so much that it's enough to just sit and breathe... it's a wonder that I'm ever hungry the next day...

cold here too, but very sunny, had the gang out for a couple of hours this afternoon, they seemed to enjoy the dry and sunny conditions a lot, took a nice communal bath under the big pine. the only winterizing left to do is put some clear plastic sheets up on the front wall and door of the enclosure to block the wind. they've acclimated quite well to the cold, so I was putting it off to the end to make sure that they are fully acclimated to what is coming.

I brought a dozen eggs to the guy who gave me all his uncarved pumpkins, 3 of each color, it looked so nice. I've got another dozen to give to my neighbors for "payment" for this winters plowing. I tried to pay him a couple of years ago and he got quite insulted... wouldn't even take money for the gas... so I've been cooking big vats of chili, or soup... or sauce and bringing them 6 quarts a week during the winter, it's nice to be able to add fresh eggs to the bargain. I've never had to do more than shovel my walkways...

Love to hear about neighbors helping neighbors... it's the way life SHOULD be.
It was chilly this morning and cold enough to snow very lightly off and on today. The chickens seemed to have cared less. Even the 16 weekers, who grew up in the garage!
Our original black australorp laid her first egg today! We got her the same time as the BO that laid her first egg 2 days ago. Seems like they took forever. We were told they were 4 months when we got them and we've had them 3 or 4 months. As "Blackie" was in her lay box today she actually GROWLED at me. Speaking of which, is it normal for a hen to completely change personality? When we got them, Blackie was so scared to join the flock she would literally jump into my lap or fly to my shoulder. She couldn't get close enough to me and loved to be held. Now, she HATES to be held and will fight to get away. She will run from us when we get near. Does this happen often?
