NY chicken lover!!!!

When its too cold for my nipple buckets I use the black rubber bowls from TSC. when they freeze, I just turn them upside down, stomp on them & the ice comes out. I have also used small plastic buckets. A couple of hits with a hammer on the sides, loosens up the ice. Just have to be careful you don't hit too hard to break the plastic.
10 eggs today. WHY didn't I put a light in the large coop last year? I don't have enough birds to feed them without them laying. Silly me, I chose breeds I liked, not ones known for laying ability. I'm learning tho. I have 2 hens of some production breed (person I raised them for decided she didn't want to add them "in the winter". Blah) I can't wait for them to start laying so I can hatch their eggs and have some more green eggs. (probably light green, since they will lay light brown eggs)

Rancher, I highly recommend heated waterers. Saves me a LOT of work. I go down once a day with 2 buckets, one empty, one full. I pour the left over water into the empty one and refill it from the full one. If I had to go own 2 or 3 times a day, they would be very thirsty, cuz I just wouldn't do it. Too lazy and hate the cold. I DO have permanant electricity to my coop however, so no lead cords strung across the yard.

Some people put their regular waterer on top of a cookie tin heater. I guess I could have done that, since I have a load of cookie tins around the house, but ordering the dog bowls online was far easier than cutting holes in a cookie tin. If I am ever allowed another coop, I do think I'll try the cookie tin thingy, just to save some money.

I also use the Black bowls for water in the winter in all the Pens but the main layer pen. I can't imagine using heated waterbowl in 7-8 pens.

I have a couple of those bowls and use them in the yard during the summer. The reason I don't keep water in the coop is they always manage to dump it. I tried setting the gallon waterers on a block inside those black rubber bowls but it didn't help.

Looks like we all have a system that works for our individual situations.

Though I always keep trying something new and easier.

If I can make it so I just have to carry water once a day that would be nice. But I'd still have to bring in the waterers at night so they can be cleaned.

I didn't hear whether anyone was interested in getting chicks from Back to the Farm?

If they had Dorkings, I might have considered.

Yes, I have 11 separate coops....even though I have electricity in the barn, that is too much power sucking up for each heater. Its bad enough I have lights in each pen as well...don't tell my DH, although I so use the new energy efficient lightbulbs fro them, but have to use normal lights for the brooders, so its a no win situation really...

Hi. Binghamton NY area here - would anyone be willing to split an order of chicks this spring? i'd like to order from McMurry, but their minimum after april is 15...i'm looking to keep like 4 or 5. i'll pay shipping on a 15 - 20 bird total order, you just pay for your chicks and tell me what to order. You'd need to pick up in endicott, NY or nearby...i could keep for a week or two - negotiable.

Interested, please contact me. :)

I am also looking for at least one each (hen/pullets) cochin, polish, and or orpington. Will consider others. Just want a nice mixed flock.
I have cochins and lav orpingtons and I get back my buff orps in the spring. are you looking to get them now or in the spring? :)
