NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey neighbor! What do you want to order? I hatch every year and just bought a cabinet incubator so I'll have tons.

The rooster I got from you last year got taken by a hawk. Boohoo. Can you hatch me another Ameruacana Lav roo? I'll come get it and pay ya "started" price. (Just thought you would want to hatch knowing at least one was sold. LOL)

ETA: Remember I don't breed for show, just for egg color, so I'll take one that isn't perfect, as long as it's Lav.

i have buff orpingtons which i am happy to stick with... but i would be curious to try a couple white orpingtons (am i even spelling that correctly?) as i read good things about them, or Speckled Sussex (i do live at the edge of the woods), maybe.... mainly i think my very spoiled little flock will always be mainly the buffs, but i am curious on other variations of the type and anything withing a generally docile/friendly breed - my flock are my babies and they are totally spoiled pets, so i want birds that like people as much as i like them.

Afternoon all. Now that blood flow has returned to my fingers I can actually type something that resembles written language. Just spent over an hour sitting outside with my silkies so they could have some freerange time. I have to sit out there because of the hawks and falcons that are around. Didnt see any and I was a giant popsicle by the time I came in. However, the cheeps were happy to get out and stretch. One of my hens came over and was making eyes at one of the young boys in the run. He seemed to like her too. Little Man, however, was not impressed that one of his wenches was oogling the young guns and promptly came over to shoo her off and pick a fight with the boys through the fence. Really? Cause its not bad enough that I am freezing my you know what off so they can freerange but I have to break up fights as well??? Boys!

I am down to getting 10 eggs a day which is pretty good since I dont supplement with light. Hopefully they keep laying. I have a rir hen that wants to be broody. Umm...no. We will talk in the spring.

Off to the chicken hearing in town tonight. I am hoping that reason prevails and this nonsense is dismissed. I will post the results when I get back.

So what does it say , the we watch chicken romance and report it to fellow chicken fanciers?? Goodness, I am so appreciative to be able to read and share this sort of stuff with like minded people!!!! I am very thankful that I have this thread and my BYC NYthread friends!! It is a little past Thanksgiving, but ...... I am thankful to all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!

On a different not I met a fellow BYCer in the local BLUESEAL!!! SSOOO COOL!!!!!!! I met RebelINNY(did I get it right?) AWESOME!!! I love meeting chicken people especially other BYCers!!

Well I'm home! Snow tomorrow? What a cruel thing to do.

I have to put the hoses away since that didn't get done. I also need to staple the plastic up. What I had stapled up got blown down. It was just a couple of thin painter drop cloths. It tore easily I guess.

I'm also missing a young bird. Maybe two. I did know there was a CR rooster that had to be put down, but I'm sorta miffed about the young Birchen Maran. Not sure what or how.

I can't fault DW since she's been so nice about taking care of them. Letting them out in the dark and shutting them up in the dark.

Take care everyone and stay warm,

Rancher

Okay...back from the meeting. Apparently 5 years ago you didnt need a permit for chickens. Anyways, the complaintent wasnt even there and the people who have said 6 chickens had to provide all kinds of pics and drawings for the planning board. Now they get to wait 60 days for an answer. Really??? There were supporters there, no disenters. I guess, according to the person who runs the board, they have been receiving more complaints about noise and/or smell over the last couple of years. We shall wait to see how this plays out and just fly under the radar for now (although its hard to miss the big coop). Guess we will be reducing our flock in the spring but I was going to do that anyways. Our neighbors are all good with us having them and the roosters so hopefully things will stay quiet (so to speak). Just seeing what people have to go through, not just for chickens, to do anything on your property, is rediculous. Thats all Im going to say.

Oh---not all I have to say. Welcome back Rancher! Hope you got dw a nifty gifty for all that work she did for you!!! (I dont think an order for hatching eggs or chicks will do it either!) lol

Well, my big roo Apple got me good tonight, and he was a good boy for doing it (bet you didn't think you'd read that!). The silkies are still refusing to sleep in the coop so I have to hoist them in every night. Well tonight one chick was not happy about it and started screaming like I was trying to kill him. Well all I hear is a big thump (the coop is pitch black) and then some chicken galloping and then wham! Apple tagged me twice. Well, I said his name in an annoyed tone and he immediately back away like, "Oops..." So he was being a good boy. That's exactly what I would have wanted him to do if it had been a raccoon or something. Still hurt like the dickens though.

Roosters can peck hard ..I think it is all that exercise their neck gets from crowing ...

I would watch him for return visits...Roosters tend to like to control everyone .

I had to put my Rooster in his place last night . I like to say good night to my 4 we raised from babies..& pet them .
he was facing out towards the middle ...he looked like he was pecking at my hand that was petting a hen ...so I put my hand in front of him to see .
Sure enough he nailed me ..I grabbed him by his neck & dragged him out of the coop ..& Tucked him under my arm ...Lecturing him about I was GOING TO pet ....who I wanted & petting him ..
I ended up taking him into the house ..as I couldnt find a flash light ..Seeing his eyes bulge as he went in the house was so funny ! .
I figured as long as i had him i would look for critters on him ..
He was back to playing keep away with me this morning !

The Flock has settled down some picking on my white chicken . I have been babying her ..When I feed the flock ..I feed her separately <- oops color ) ..& make sure she eats .
The rooster still chases her away sometimes ..unless I am standing next to her ..

The lady that her friend had a chicken that was getting picked on bad ..Can she separate her in to a separate pen ? When it was bad at 1st I took the hen away from the flock
for a couple days ..( she slept in a small animal cage I had ) I let them free range together with supervision ..She got blue coat on her Boo Boo ..& me too ...nasty staining stuff
She is smarter now ...she watches for trouble ...they dont bother her as much now ..& she is back in with them all the time .
We also moved the coop & made a bigger run ..so they all have some more space now ..Our set up was for 4- 6 chicken s...& we got 4 given to us ..so our run was crowded with 9 ...

LoL, woke up this morning and my voice is completely gone (upper respiratory infection). I feel fine but today at work will be verrrrrrrrrrrry interesting, especially since I work as a triage nurse and spend all day on the phone. I'd call off, but that's a day of pay I'd have to eat PLUS we are short two people already. Wish me luck lol! :)

(hey, anyone here a phlebotomist that needs a job? must be able to clear a mega federal background check)..

Still haven't decided whether to do the NYD hatch - don't have any eggs lined up, but I always have fun running into my 'hatching room' while watching the festivities to see what little peeps made it out. :) Anyone else doing the hatch?

My poor chooks haven't been out of their coop/runs all week - by the time I get home, everyone is roosting. =(
