On the topic of intersex individuals. The current movement is heading toward assigning social gender but not surgical assignment until the individual is able to determine for themselves how they want to proceed, if at all, with surgical assignment. Having known a few individuals myself who were assigned surgically at a young age, most are resentful about it and wish they had just been "left alone". The intersex support community is growing, social and psychological support is absolutely necessary as the children grow up. Remember that society has gender identity issues, intersex people (and gay people) are simply living as they were made. Helping them navigate this brutal world is important, forced surgical conformity is thankfully coming more into question.

The link is to the Intersex society of North America. A useful support for parents, teachers and folks who just want to understand.

I heard a speech a couple days ago titled, "Is Anatomy Destiny?" The speaker explored atypical anatomy, from conjoined twins to disabled people, and intersexed individuals.

My favorite quote:

"In fact, we now know that sex is complicated enough that we have to admit nature doesn't draw the line for us between male and female, or between male and intersex and female and intersex; we actually draw that line on nature. So what we have is a sort of situation where the farther our science goes, the more we have to admit to ourselves that these categories that we thought of as stable anatomical categories that mapped very simply to stable identity categories are a lot more fuzzy than we thought."

Given the fine balance between physiology, hormones and glands, and the huge range of possibility, is it so strange that many of us "choose" to display, behave, and love outside the "norm"?
