hi,
just wondering if the shavings can be white or red oak instead of pine? hubby just got done making furniture out of oak, and have some bagged up.

thanks,
mary

Interesting. I am not sure. I know Cedar is bad because it releases phenols that can damage the lining of the air ways. Not familiar with if oak has the same properties or not.

Welcome!

I personally wouldn't use them. They don't seem to absorb like pine shavings and they are REALLY heavy to clean. I have never used them on chicks, but I tried them on our laying hens and I didn't have any adverse effects from red oak. Just that they didn't seem to be a very good option for bedding.
