Oats for chicks and grit

Thanks again Leadwolf1. This is our first try at chicks (my mom had some in late 90s and didn't remember having these issues) and we want to give all of them a good start. I had the littlest chick of the 27 die on day 2 as I held her. I bawled like a baby, so did my 12 yr old son! Don't want to go through that again! The remaining 26 seem to be doing great other than pasty butt and I'm like a hawk watching and cleaning, lol. My husband mentioned we haven't had this little of sleep since our boys were born.

i check my chicks twice per day for pasty butt...for 2 weeks...I'm obsessed with that :) The oatmeal and grit will really help. Have you tried a little vaseline/neosporin on the ones that show symptoms? After cleaning their hinnies, I put a dab of neosporin on them to help the poo slide right off..works really well :) It also helps mat the feathers down so there is less to stick to.

Although I didn't lose any sleep, I hear the slightest change in a peep and I'm instantly awake! It is very similar to having a human baby around again.

Also, 3/4 tsp of Apple Cider Vinegar to one quart of water will help also.

You and your son are not alone! We have sobbed over chicks/chickens...it's impossible not to lose your heart to them.

I put the apple cider vinegar in their water this am. I think we are going to go get a few baby cakes today too. We have two hutches for the chicks to prevent over crowding.
