Hello everyone!

I've stumbled upon backyard chickens anytime I've had to google a question about chickens. Though lately I've found that some of the questions I've had haven't been answered yet and I NEED HELP!

A little about myself; I've only raised chickens once before alongside my in-laws. I totally FELL IN LOVE with my little chicken family but unfortunately my people family and I decided to take our journey elsewhere and I haven't been able to get new chickens since. This fall I'll be moving into a new place with a chicken coop that is in some serious need of TLC (so stay tuned if you want to see pictures and give advice!) I'm also looking for cost effective ways to feed my new chicken family come spring.

Thanks for reading! Can't wait to hear from you all and learn from some chicken experts!

Welcome to BYC where we all love chickens to. Take your time when you redo your coop in your new home. Figure out how many chickens you want and decide if the coop needs to be enlarged before you begin. 4 to 5 square feet per bird for inside the coop. First measure the coops length times the width and find out how many feet it is. (8x10=80 square feet.) Now take the 80 square feet and divide it by 5 =16 chickens. Remember to make it big enough for chicks also if you have a rooster. AS chicken math is a possibility. Hens hide eggs at times and if they free range you may end up with a clutch of chicks.

You may want to check out the "coops section," for ideas and the "predator threads," for advice on safeguarding your bird.
