Legal hispanics are looses jobs to illegals also. I'm Native SoCal. PS I've picked Oranges and I'm white.

don't know that we're more civilized, although my observation is that folks here are considerably more polite than in SoCal.

I wasn't speaking about your particular situation, I was speaking about what ours was in SoCal, where the illegals are working and the legals within the same job market aren't. my comment on your situation was in part that it may be a regional attitude about that particular kind of work. doesn't seem to be the case here, for the same kind of work. I don't know what the local tree-trimming wages are relative to other hot dirty jobs, just that it does not appear to be illegals doing it, so whatever they're paying, it seems to be enough to get legal workers in this area interested. my guess is that it's not a great paying job, that's why I think it may be regional attitude.

Great. 50 more people like you and we might have been able to get our grove picked without a single illegal...but wait...I don't see anybody else in line?

This was many years ago...it might be easier nowadays....but I doubt it. Fact is, we Americans are kinda spoiled.

OP if you read it suggests that we are all part of the 100%, and we've proven in this discussion that we each want to be in X and Y. I don't disagree that there should be disagreement - healthy debate is just that... healthy. Ad hominem attack, however, isn't.

An interesting take on the Robbers Cave experiment: http://www.spring.org.uk/2007/09/war-peace-and-role-of-power-in-sherifs.php

Perhaps
some day us X's and Y's will realize that someone does benefit from a devolution of the discussion from issues to personal attacks, and it's not X or Y.

Just a simple plea to keep this thread focused on what, not who.

well he's not helping them any... california legislators REALLY don't care what some guy in GA does... they don't care with the people who voted them into office think, so some guy in the south? HA! they wouldn't even sniff in his direction. ok, well, they might laugh and point. you know, it IS the south, after all, and you know how THEY are.

Royd, Q9, I think I love you guys.

I've heard some remarkably *dumb* things come out of the occupy folks. things like "they need to give everyone $20 per hour jobs". back to back with the kill the corporations rhetoric. wonder who they think is going to be giving them the jobs once all the corporations are gone. oh, right, the government.
roll.png
that and the guys with the ipods and iphones who want to destroy the corporations. somehow they seem to miss the irony in that. and BOY are they going to be bored once the iCorporations are all dead.

when I was in college, there was a spate of graffiti on campus - showed up on windows and lockers and newspaper sale boxes - it said "anarchy creates a free society." and it was carefully spray painted on with a perfectly lined up, clearly readable, evenly centered, block-lettered stencil, exactly the same, everywhere it was painted. I always wondered if they were deliberately being ironic, or if they were too dense to get the joke of it all. you know, anarchy, with uniform precise identical lettering, always the same every time.

No, why don't you tell us? I am quite curious to know. I was not aware the everyone from the south was a collective "way".

We aren't...It's just the way the Collective California views us....The irony of it all, is; their bigotry views our bigotry as the real bigotry. Just ask a Vegan about the rest of the world.

I hired many people as well who were happy to have a job. They were Mexicans with fake "green cards". Whiteys never applied. The state of Georgia recently felt the same sting of this when it couldn't find anybody to harvest produce. Google it...it's there and it's fact. Mexicans are not "stealing" anybody's jobs. This is just one of many, many, many, many, many, many, many Right Wing conspiracies. I expect you'll respond by saying that you said nothing about Mexicans, but it doesn't matter, your Right Wing rhetoric has no merit either way. More later, I have homework to do now with a deadline in 45 minutes....(because it's submitted via the internets these days...but I don't expect you to be familiar with that phenomenon).

Any bets that if you offered those Occupiers a job picking veggies or fruit at .50 a lb. they'd turn it down, because they've been brought up to believe such work is beneath them? The irony is that you've gone from contractor to gardener and are still surviving, as have I, athough, gardening and farming have always been in my blood. At the age of 12, I spent 11 hour days in the field, irrigating, and during potato harvest, the first two years, bending my back and filling sacks, along with the Mexicans and Indians. It was work, not a station in life.
As long as this crowd, brought on fully, by our Redistributor in Chief, believes in a classless society, they'd better get use to the classless jobs.
It is time for society to cast of the shackles of upward mobility, grab that basket and ladder and head to the nearest orchard.

oh gosh, it's clear there's no communication to be had here. if you can't tell the difference between someone's personal experience and rhetoric, then really, I'm all done.

Honestly, toots...let's face it.... the early-mid 2000s were booming economic times for everybody. We were all livin' large and drivin' fancy cars...so if, as you have stated, that's when your husband started facing tough times, then that's just plain failure. Not only failure, but also flailure. hahahaha

The issues the Occupy movement and myself are facing are AS A RESULT of those times...the artificial excesses of those times....and the resulting crash that came down upon the working class.

do you get it? Probably not.

Could you BE more patronizing?
For someone with such a liberal perspective, you certainly aren't very "PC"-you're not setting a very good example for the rest of us that think political correctness is...well, you can figure it out.

Secondly, you have just proven the lack of responsibility theory with you comment about the artificial excesses...did you buy a car you couldn't afford? A house you couldn't afford? Did you live outside your means? If so, how do you blame that on anyone but yourself?
Sorry, I'm just not impressed with your rhetoric...

*I* didn't do ANY of those things, yet when the crash came, I lost a lifetime of savings. The cushion for my retirement is now gone and it's long past the time when I can go back to my original career. Now we are grateful that we have chickens or there'd be very little protein in our diet these days. And against that backdrop I read about the huge bonuses the banks and brokerage houses pay their people and I gotta say, that is messed up. THEY blew through everything I saved in my lifetime with their terrible greed. They did it using money they promised to "grow" for me and all the little investors like me--and THEY are being rewarded and I am eating eggs. Nobody can tell me that is right or that it is somehow MY fault. I followed all the rules and worked hard all my life and MY reward is to sometimes go hungry so I can feed my horses?

The top 1% got richer. They got richer by stealing from me and everyone like me.

D-a-m-n straight I support the Occupy movement.

We ALL lost money in the stock market crash-ALL of us!
IF you believe that the problems have come from TARP, WHY aren't you angry with your current administration? Does the name Solyndra sound familiar? All of these banks that are foreclosing AFTER they received money from TARP? Yeah, they suck, but guess what? The CURRENT president is the one that gave them that money to squander.
If you all want a cause, try occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and let the administration know you're fed up with THEIR squandering.
