I have Coturnix quail.  They start laying at 7 weeks!  Usually about 1/2 are fertile and about 3/4 of those that develop will hatch.  There are always a few (1 - 3 out of 15) that make it to about 3 days and then fail to thrive.  Put marbles or rocks in their water dish.  Quail babies like to bathe when they drink and they can get chilled  or drown.  I pick out the best sized birds and I put one male with 5 hens when they begin to lay.  There will be six breed cages and one cage of a few extra males.  The rest go into the freezer.  To peel quail eggs I add the eggs  to enough boiling water to cover them, I then add 1/2 cup of white vinegar for each 50 eggs.  Boil for 3 minutes, cover and set aside until the eggs are cool.  The vinegar dissolves most of the calcium shell and leaves the inner membrane.  Starting at the big end of the egg, tap it on a hard surface and begin peeling off the strip  of shell.  It is a time consuming process to peel over 100 eggs at a time, but that will make a quart of pickled eggs.

I really like your coop construction.  How will you winterize it?

Thank you, there are now cedar board along the bottom all the way around and we will wrap it and the other coops in plastic and supply a heat lamp to all pins.

It is good looking! My husband and I built ours from scratch. It's fun. I was wondering ....you stated that there's cedar flooring? I know that chickens can't handle the cedar smell that we all love. Too much inhalation is toxic for them. I don't know about the actual boards. But I do know not ever to use cedar chips as bedding. So I would think it would be the same concept. You also said it would be wrapped in plastic. So maybe that'll be enough to eliminate the odor for their sensitive systems. I'd definitely research it just to be on the safe side. And please let me know what you learn! God bless.

Ohhh ok. Sorry. I do so love cedar. It's just beautiful and pleasant. I just want your babies to be safe.

Yea we did too. Although we built it in like freezing cold weather! It snowed and we had to have a little fire going. I know I know! Not an ideal time to build a coop! It's just that we didn't have any of the materials until then. As we used all free lumber! My brother was redoing his horse pasture and gave us all of his really nice wood. I believe we have $50 in the whole thing! Screws and such. But they were very happy to move into their new mansion! Just in time for the bitter weather. Let me know what you find out. I'm interested.

building in the snow more power to you. Ours is built out of scraps from construction jobs my husband has done recently we have just what wire cost in it, that's how we built all the coops. Back to the cedar tho I did read where it's toxic and not to use it as bedding but I also read that's it's highly recommended for building because it doesn't rot. I also found that most prefab coops are made from cedar.

Today is hatch day and I am hearing chirps from the bator. I think two have started to break through it is loud enough I can hear it clearly ten feet from the bator. And I had a weeper. Had to open up the bator and get it out. Luckily I keep paper towels under the eggs. So not a big mess.
