OCTOBER HATCH-A-LONG!!! 2015

Well It looks like one of my 7 month old white leghorns may be broody. She took to setting on all 7 eggs that were laid by my girls yester day. I keep going out there to see if she has moved yet and she's still there. I am very excited but nervous. I hope she will stay and hatch them out but I have been told multiple times and even seen it on here that leghorns really don't get broody. My son wants to stick a few more eggs in there, lol 7 isn't enough for him.

Tiffani I'm so sorry that happened but remember it wasn't on purpose people are clumsy. My first hatch when we candled BC of course everyone wanted to be there I made everyone sit down and we put a blanket under us. Things happen. I know its not the same but one of our dogs kicked our egg basket last week when I was untying her(she's been running in the road) and broke all but two eggs. I know I wasn't incubating them but I just wanted you to know that everyone has those disaster moments

I'm a horrible aweful person! I just dropped the flash light on an egg and cracked it open it had a beautiful baby chick in it and now it's lost because I couldn't leave things alone. No more itchy fingers here I'm not opening the incubator again until thursday, the day after hatch.

Oh, No!

I did something similar on Saturday-dropped a quail egg that got stuck in the egg turner while removing the egg turner for lock down. Poor little thing! Didn't see it until it went "crack!"

Getting close now

I know that we all have accidents and in incubation or not we feel bad over our chicks and eggs.

This is why I love these hatch alongs it's great to know there's people out there going through exactly what you are.

Of my 2 left both have a really tiny pip on the fat end of the egg. Don't know when this happened as I found them this morning getting ready for work. I've had 2 sets die from piping on bottom before so hopefully since these are piped on top they'll survive. So afraid they are not going to make it. I'll be back in a few hours to check on them but when should I worry if they can't get out? Can I pick them up to see if they are doing ok inside the shell? I'm afraid to open the incubator for any reason.
...This is one of those ****** if you do...****** if you don't situations. I have had many shipped eggs pip in the bottom and still hatch ok. I have had many pip in the bottom and go through a blood vessel and die and many malpositioned and get stuck. The problem is that the chick first is supposed to pip into the air cell....then later push through the shell. Bottom pippers aren't ready to pip through that shell and often get into trouble. If you help them pre-maturely you will kill the chick...if you don't help them in the appropriate amount of time...chick dies...and then sometimes chick hatches and no worries.
I like to let the chick give it his best to hatch. I won't open the incubator and compromise the hatch for the others. I would break someone's fingers if they open my incubator prior to day 22/23 when I call the hatch. But, these are all things you will become more comfortable with as you establish the way you want to hatch. Everyone is different...and that's okay!

Happy hatching! Hope they all make it out ok

I think that is a rite of passage for hatchers!!!! Don't beat yourself up! I did that with one of my eggs too but I wound up waxing it because it wasn't fully opened. Chick didn't hatch. I was crushed!

On a positive note...incubator is chirping...Looks like there were 8 out when i last checked (Sussex, Hona and Hona/Isbar mixes.) ...about 4 more pips and one guy that pipped yesterday on the wrong side if his egg...but, his hole is bigger today so, he is making some progress!

Should have some really nice chicks in this group of hona's.

My girls did it!! I decided to let my two Silkie Hens hatch 7 eggs....and they hated out all 7, 100%. This was their first time going broody, and first time hatching some eggs. I am so happy!!

Good job hens! My two broodies are doing great with their chicks too. Unfortunately 7 out of my 8 chicks look like they are going to be cockerels.
