October Hatch-a-long 2022šŸŽƒšŸ£šŸ

This is a cute thread! I’ve actually got a bantam hen who went broody on the 21st, two days ago, and am also planning on hatching out 12 ee/oe eggs, 8 of which I have collected, so i’ll have them on the incubator within a week at most.

Here’s broody, she’s a little bantam named reese’s! 5 of the eggs are her own, 3 are full-sized eggs, no clue how she fits them all under her. Hoping for some fibro babies from her eggs for a little personal project of mine.View attachment 3269100
Welcome! 😊 Reece’s is precious!šŸ˜
What breed is she?

She’s just a mutt, i figure a silkie cross of some sort. She goes broody quite often, but has quit out on the first day every other time, and has the black skin that silkies similarly have.
I hatch most of my Silkies’ eggs in an incubator despite their broody qualities. Mostly because I vaccinate my chicks against Mareks and sell them at around one week of age. I have successfully grafted chicks to a broody to raise. These are chicks that I plan to keep or at least grow out usually.
I have one perpetually broody hen, Layla. She’s broody more often than she is not. She’ll sit on fake eggs or even nothing for months! Broody jail has never worked on her. The one time I tried to give her some real eggs she sat on them for nine days and then decided she was done with it! Luckily I was able to get them before it was too late and finish the hatch in an incubator.😊

I have chicks due on the 2nd of October! Started with 14 Cream Legbar eggs from a local breeder and 9 "barnyard cross" (Black Copper Marans rooster over hybrid hens) from a local farmer that were only possibly fertile. There were supposed to be 12 of the legbar eggs, but the breeder gave me a few extra because some were quite small eggs from a hen that only recently started laying.

As of today, there's been two week one quitters (the two smallest eggs) and one week two quitter from the blue eggs, and six clears in the barnyard crosses. So 11 cream legbar eggs and 3 of the barnyard crosses remain. Keeping my fingers crossed for the next candling before lockdown to show everyone developing well, as I'd love another 4-5 pullets to add to the run once they get bigger.

I've definitely learned my lesson to be cautious and certain before cracking eggs open... Luckily, there have been no mistakes on any of the eggs thrown out, but there was one barnyard cross egg I almost took out two days ago, but I re-checked it today and it's looking fine!

Welcome to BYC and this thread!😊
Hoping the rest hatch for you!

Questions....do you sometimes see no development on the 4-5 day of incubation. I have 3 eggs I see development but 3 I don't and was wondering if that is normal. Either way I left the eggs in the incubator so I will retest them in a few days.
Veining can be very faint at that age. Wait until day 10 before chucking.
