October Hatch-A-Long

Sorry to be a downer when all these cute lil' fluffy butt pictures are being posted but I could use some input.

Candled last night and pulled four eggs two were clear and one had a blood ring. The last egg was really weird looking. It had, what looked like, this cloudy floaty thing in the middle of the egg. It almost looked like part of the yolk was free floating away from where the chick should have been but I didn't see the eye of the chick that I look for and there was not a lot of veining that I could see.

When I did the eggtopsy on it it was on 7 day (right where it should have been) but it was dark red. I think the cloudy area that I saw floating was the circle of the white part of the egg. It was the weirdest thing. The other chicks (from first hatch) that were about that far were not red like that.

I hope I didn't kill a live chick!

No idea what it should look like but I do know that at 10 days we had one looked totally different to the others when we candled and I thought about throwing it then but though what the heck its not going to explode because I leave it a little longer to be sure. Six days later one of the ones that looked good looks just like it did so must have died and that dubious one is full of chick.

I think the biggest thing I got out of this first hatch is dont be too fast to discard eggs. Nothing is going to explode in the first two weeks so there is no harm in leaving anything that you are even the slightest bit unsure of until just before lockdown.

There are a couple more in the bator that have that weird cloudy swishy type thing in the middle but I can see veins and what looks to be a chick eye in the middle. This egg I didn't see that, which is weird because the chick has eyes. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

I got better pics. Today's day 7, is it dead?

Went out to gather the eggs and broody was off her nest and sitting on another, knew she hadn't been there for more than a few hours as I had been out there earlier.. I tried blocking her in her nest but she chose a top nesting box so its hard to block as she obviously got out... She is one of the younger hens, if I keep going through this with her I'm gonna have to break her as I have nowhere else to put her... I have tried moving her twice and she refuses.

Can you move the eggs to her?

Just to recap and make sure I'm understanding. She is in a top nest box and refuses to be moved to a lower one that can be blocked off to keep her on/near the nest?

If I am understanding, I'm sorry that she's not staying put. Is there anyway you can incubate them?

That's the problem, although I am home a lot I aint out there a lot and if she keeps nest jumping well whats the use?? Just talked to DH and he said wait til he got home and he will devise something to block her in where she cant get out... So funny, every hen is different, my last two had no problem being blocked, I removed the barrier around the same time everyday so they knew that was when they went out and were back on the same nest within an hour... This one is alittle touched I think

Yes, that's it.. Sorry, I tend to ramble.. :)

I have an incubator but really, she is only on day 2 so I doubt I would do that as the incubator chicks are on day 17 ... DH is going to try and figure out something, I thought I had it figured out but much to my surprise when I took away the board she wasn't in there, what I thought was another Maran I had was actually her sitting on another nest... Crazy chicken
