October Hatch-A-Long

ACK! dropped an egg last night while doing my nightly rotate down/up a row :barnie

Chick was perfect and right where it should have been for day 7!

Candling tonight and marking air cells.

What a coincidence! One of our day 7 eggs broke last night too. So sad! My 9 yo dd cried and cried about how she killed Jewell's chick. And we took out 3 that stopped progressing. So we started 4 more in their place. So now we have 4 at day 14, 2 at day 7 and 4 at day 1. I'm starting to think it was a mistake to replace the bad eggs like this.

And the broody BR is sitting on 11 eggs. And she laid another but I took it inside. Broodys aren't supposed to lay are they?

So do you have another incubator for lockdown so the hatching eggs aren't hatching with the newer ones? If not then I'd go search staggered hatching cause I'm sure I've read it's not recommended.

No, but I could put the day 18 eggs under my broody out back. Is that a possibility?

Depends what day the eggs she is already sitting on are on. If these start to hatch she will only sit on the ones she is already on for a few more days and will then have to take these off to learn to feed etc so if they have a week or more to go as well she will either abandon those or ignore the chicks, she cant be in two places at once.

From what Ive read its easier all round if what is under the hen or in the incubator (unless you have a second for lockdown) is due to hatch the same time. Im new to this too but Id really head off and do some reading on staggered hatches so you know what lies ahead so you are prepeared. What happens when these need to be locked down at a higher humidity and the incubator not touched but the others still need turning and the regular humidity? that sort of stuff. Im sure its do-able but Id be finding out how now not when it all goes pear shape at lockdown LOL

You may also need to have a different brooder for each lot as well I suspect or the older ones may pick on the younger. But again go check Ive got that right.

There are some experienced hatchers that do staggered hatches in one incubator and don't even do lockdown... you can search for it here on BYC.
Many people do things differently and have great hatches!

It's more than 24 hours after the first hatch (and moreso since pip) and the second egg hasn't been doing anything. I know to give til day 25 and then take a closer look, but I'm worried it might be dead! Poor single chick is very lonely, and my second batch doesn't go in to lockdown until the 14th. I really hope the 2nd egg hatches, but I might consider buying a chick locally. Sleeping by the brooder and speed showering to keep the baby from crying constantly gets old fast!

Does anyone have advice for finding chicks? Chick season is long over, I'm worried I won't be able to even if I decide to! This is also a serama baby, so they are TEENSY

You could ask on the American Serama thread... sorry your second egg didn't make it!

Congrats on the new fluff butts !!!! Its always so exciting to see the pips and watch everyone get to experience the thrill of hatching!

Day 17 here... Going to candle tonight and see where we are.. I haven't really done full candling, my light is good enough I can shine it on the top of the egg and see the veining well enough to know who made it and who didn't..
Grandson is here with us for the week, Momma had to go out of town to care for a sick parent and having all three boys during this time was a bit stressful for her, so he gets some time with Poppy and Nanny by himself while daddy is working..

He was so cute last night when we went out to feed and water the flock last evening, checked and had a late egg layer so I gave him the egg to carry back to the house and he was so very careful carrying it because as he said, there is a baby in there nanny, I explained to him that no, there wasn't a baby in there we are going to eat that egg, that only when Nanny puts the egg in the incubator will their be a baby.. Hard trying to get a 4 year old to understand why we weren't going to put that egg in the incubator...lol, to him every egg should be put in the incubator!!

He got the Tom turkey to gobble at him, I never get tired of children's laughter
