October Hatch-A-Long

Now that last bit I can understand

So I set them on a Friday night so the little beggars should have started hatching last night which was Friday night 3 weeks later.

They need to get a bit of a wriggle on!

Well yes and no

21 days is just a baseline and some take longer or come early!

Tossed my three suspicious trader joe's today. They're so easy to see into that I felt confident they were quitters. Two had blood rings and the other had one tiny streak that never went further. I candled the egg (TJ1) that we are watching daily for pics for my son's science project and we seen it moving I think! Is that possible at 6.5 days?

Day 2 is almost complete for the 22 farmers market barnyard mix.

yes it is. Careful though it's addicting watching them move around. The more you handle the eggs the more likely you are to have quitters, at least that is what I have read from the more experienced hatchers.

Honestly I think the last couple of days have seemed longer than the last three weeks lol

Can really understand how people end up with multiple incubators and hatching 30 or more at a time. It really is an addictive pastime isn't it :)

We are leaving the rest alone until day 10, but this one is being monitored daily for my son's science project. Hopefully it makes it but it's a risk we are taking. Hard to not mess with the others though! I did too much already and trying to back off now

I think (and I really hoping the more experienced hatchers will come along and save my butt here) You set the eggs on 9 pm Saturday. Sunday morning when you wake up you are on day 0. At 9 pm on Sunday it becomes day 1. When you wake up on Monday morning you are on day 1 until 9 pm then it becomes day 2. Rinse, lather, repeat.

ETA
Day 21 will be the same day of the week that you set the eggs on. So if you set at 9 pm on a Saturday your "hatch" time is 9 pm on a Saturday.
I think that is the easiest way to remember it... I set a few eggs today and in 3 Fridays they will hatch... though they may hatch a day early.

I will admit I candle a lot!! I love it, it is part of the joy for me! I am also the kind of gardener who will dig up seeds to see if they have sprouted! I hand turn my eggs so I can't keep my hands off of them at all. I would worry about it but my hatch rates are very good!

I hand turn as well. It is difficult to keep my flashlight away from them! I just re-watch the videos that I have on youtube of the previous hatch. Unfortunately I had a temp spike and killed them on day 15-16 and one who survived the spike but died right after lock down.
