October Hatch-A-Long

Lockdown is approaching for "batch 2." Hardly can call it a batch, as there is a single egg still developing. If it hatches, that makes 18 eggs, 2 chicks... this is my first time hatching, def. putting a damper on me wanting to do it again any time soon. I've been so attentive! The baby from the last batch, Chip, is doing excellently even though he came from a small egg. I really hope this one hatches out so he has a pal.

Will have to get a better incubator when I'm next ready to hatch Serama, I suppose. I don't think I'll be hatching my layer flock since I couldn't keep LF roosters.

My first hatch was in a homemade incubator. I think only 6 hatched of 28 or something. I really enjoyed the process and loved watching them hatch, so I saved for a little while and got a nicer incubator. Now it's so enjoyable and super easy! Don't give up! :)

Many do you saw my "Broody Penthouse." Well, now I made a lean-to
Broody Apartment in the shed coop. I love it cause it gives mom privacy, keeps the flock out of the chick crumbles, but still let's them all coexist and get to know one another. Mom feels like part of the flock, and babies are safe to explore.

One egg pipped! I noted that this one was obviously moving a lot at day 7 and had huge veins at day 14. It's a little EE/BR mix. Tiny egg. Jewell's eggs are smaller than medium because she just started laying. 3 more to go. 1 more EE/BR and 2 BR. My 2 youngest (ages 9 and 5) are camped out in front of the incubator. Popcorn and all. :)

Seramas are a bit harder to hatch and were your eggs shipped? That makes for a lot of quitters. It is awesome that you hatched the first one. I am still trying to figure out humidity for the little eggs! I have a homemade incubator but I bought a good thermostat for only $14 and a fan and it seems to hold temp better that many purchased incubators. The first hatches are the hardest... so don't be too discouraged because it will get easier and that is when it gets fun!

One hatched overnight! The incubator is in dd's room and she woke up at 5:30am to a clatter and some cheeping inside the incubator. The other 3 have pipped and it'll be only a few hours till they are all out!
