October Hatch-A-Long

Help!  The third one started bleeding while it's still in the shell.  I'm so worried....

Pictures would help but here's a little basic info.

Sometimes they bleed a little if they break through in a spot with veins. If it's reall bad and you aren't putting other chicks at risk you can take a damp peice of paper towel or tp and put it on the spot that's bleeding to minimize it. But make sure you don't block off the pip hole so the chick can breath.

How can you tell? Do you have a picture? Did you try to assist or did the bleeding happen by itself?
I think It's okay. It broke a vein in the shell when it was pecking at the hole. Still moving and breathing. I'm just going to give it time to let those veins dry up before he comes out.

Question: What is the first thing I feed/water the day old chicks? The ones I bought in April from the store were already eating and drinking when I bought them, so how do I teach them what to do? I dipped their little beaks in the water, but I don't know if that is what other people do.

Our new babies are doing good on their own. I did show them where the water was, put a beak in it (food and water is in small little clear custard cups). The water one has a big rock in it so my babies don't drown. I showed them the food and they figured it out on their own after stepping, kicking, and sleeping with it.

This is the oldest 3 of our first hatch. There are two more in the incubator and several eggs to go.

Congratulations!

Winters eggs are hatching on day 19!! So far 4 chicks out of 8 eggs. 3 of the eggs are pipping and the other one is cheeping inside the egg!!!
Will post pics later!

Day 24 and my chicks under my broody have finally begun to hatch. I'm sitting here waiting for enough daylight to see how the one that started to pip last night is progressing.

From six eggs that made it to "lockdown" there is a chance of 3 as I think I ruled a few out last night candling for signs of an internal pip before I got to the pipping one and stopped. One stopped around day 10 but I hadn't taken it out earlier in case I was wrong. Two others I looked at seem to have gone a bit bloody and liquidy since I looked round day 16. Two did look slightly different to the other three back then so hopefully that means the last three are all in with a chance.
If just this one makes it I will be over the moon though :)

So timely reminder guys, Mother Nature doesn't always keep to the calendar. Sit on those hands and don't give up till day 24 at least :)

EDITEd to add still too dark to see in her box but found half an eggshell next to her so fingers crossed its healthy and my first time mum had no issues towards it when it came out last night. The empty shell was also on the opposite side to where the one that was hatching last night was which is curious.

Tell me about it lol. I discovered this morning that in my excitement last night I forgot to cover any of their feed lol. If these kids don't get moving soon so we can go look I am going to go poke them! I need to have a peek!!
