October Hatch-A-Long

Day 19 for me. No action so far. This is my first hatch, though. Not sure what to expect.

How exciting! First you might notice the eggs rocking back and forth... This means the chick has internally pipped and is running out of oxygen. The CO2 levels get high and cause its little muscles to spasm. You might even hear some little chirping from in the egg. Next, the chick will externally pip, making the hole in the egg. It will rest from 5 min to 24 hours and then unzip!

I'd recommend you read Sally Sunshine's guide to assisted hatching, just in case you need to help. Good luck!

Really wishing the hen would have decided to go broody last week, I have 7 Orpington eggs in the bator on day 15 today that I would have given her!

My broody ate one of my eggs tha was developing . It did have a small crack (no leakage) so she might of sensed something and ate it. Or it could of been that the person watching her while I was gone forgot to give her food and Luna and Turkey (her 10 week old chick) got hungry...

12 hours in to hatch and my one pip still has not zipped. Gonna give it 'til 5 o'clock, that's 18 hours and when castle delight seramas suggest assisting w/this breed. I can't tell if the other has externally pipped, my glass window is too small and fogged up!

Day 16 today and 9 of the 12 are still growing well, getting very excited now!

You're only on day 19. I just had one hatch at day 22! I think they come a bit later in the fall. Good luck! And remember patience! Haha (easy for us to say, right?)

I don't think she would be broody long enough to accept live chicks, she might kill them..

Typically the threads that that I have read is broody for at least 10 days to 2 weeks.
