October Hatch-A-Long

Hatch is finished. In summary I started with 12 eggs, 2 clears and 1 early quitter, 9 made it to lock down, 6 hatched 3 dead in shell, only 1 had internally pipped. I hate the late deaths most of all, so sad to see them fully formed but not make it past the final hurdle. The 6 that did hatch are happy in the brooder and out, they all come running when the boys come near. 1 Seems weak and its legs are mildly splayed, so will keep a close eye on him. This is their first outing into the chickie playground the boys made for them, they seemed to quite enjoy it. Good luck to all with hatches to come. x
Late deaths would be pretty hard, I really hope I don't end with some of those because of the air cells in these shipped eggs. I never could see them very well so not sure how good they ended up.

So sweet that your son is sharing his toys with the chicks.

Nothing going on here. I'm confused about what day I'm on. I put the eggs under Snowy three weeks ago tonight. Does that mean I'm on day 20 or 21?

I'm the same, what day is day 1? The morning after you put them in or 24 hrs after that? So if they go in Friday night is 12 hrs later when it's Saturday day 1 or 36 hrs later on Sunday?

It's 24 hours after you set them in the incubator. If you set them at 3:00 pm on Saturday day 1 starts 3:00 pm on Sunday. A lot of people set their eggs right before bed to help keep track of days. Of course this is what I understood it to mean ... I could be wrong, I frequently am!

So 9pm Friday night makes day 1 start 9pm Saturday night and then it would run through to 9pm Sunday night when we click over to day 2.

Which really kinda makes during the day on Sunday day 1 which means day 21 for us is actualy Saturday not Friday??.

You can see why I'm confused lol

We have TWO little ducklings!!

I am thrilled they both hatched... one is black spotted and the other is all yellow, more like a Pekin than an Ancona, but adorable!

I got one photo that I'll upload. I am sure I'll be able to get more in the next couple days. Mama is being so sweet and talking to them. I am going to move them to the shed, probably tomorrow... we'll see how that goes!

I think (and I really hoping the more experienced hatchers will come along and save my butt here) You set the eggs on 9 pm Saturday. Sunday morning when you wake up you are on day 0. At 9 pm on Sunday it becomes day 1. When you wake up on Monday morning you are on day 1 until 9 pm then it becomes day 2. Rinse, lather, repeat.

ETA
Day 21 will be the same day of the week that you set the eggs on. So if you set at 9 pm on a Saturday your "hatch" time is 9 pm on a Saturday.

Tossed my three suspicious trader joe's today. They're so easy to see into that I felt confident they were quitters. Two had blood rings and the other had one tiny streak that never went further. I candled the egg (TJ1) that we are watching daily for pics for my son's science project and we seen it moving I think! Is that possible at 6.5 days?

Day 2 is almost complete for the 22 farmers market barnyard mix.

Now that last bit I can understand

So I set them on a Friday night so the little beggars should have started hatching last night which was Friday night 3 weeks later.

They need to get a bit of a wriggle on!
