October Hatch-A-Long

I'M EGG-CITED!!!!! THRILLED AND DOING A HAPPY DANCE!

Darla, my hen that has been sitting on 13 eggs has hatched 2 chicks so far!

I went out to feed and water everyone and heard a little cheep, cheep.
I lifter her up, and one chick was nice and fluffy, and the other was still wet, so it just hatched.

Curtis said he's surprised I'm not out there taking 35 pictures.

Pictures will come later in the day.

I'm glad I moved the brooding hens to the hutch I built just for such an occasion!!
THIS IS MY VERY FIRST HATCH EVER!
I'M NOW A CHICKEN GRANDMA!

Congratulations! Looking forward to pics of your gran-peeps.

my new babies being hatched by a Wyandotte. My first hatch ever. This breed are such good brooders.

The hen is not the mama to all these eggs.

Any one of these hens could be the mama of the eggs in the nest, and the papa is the big red rooster with a white tail. The hens are several breeds, red mix of RIR and NH, BO, Silver Wyandotte, Gold Wyandotte, Dominique, and Leghorns. An interesting surprise barnyard mixture.

Four fluff balls and counting! I see another pip, so hopefully at least one more!!
One of the eggs seems to have had a bit of membrane still in it, and part was stuck to a chick - I hope it wasn't the yolk. It seems like it's come off now in the excitement of the lights being turned on. Has anyone seen this before / have any advice?

So cute... congrats!!

They surely are taking their time. How much sleep did you get last night? I'm still tired from my stinkers. The last chick of mine just sat and peeped out the hole for 11 hours. I guess it was happy there. It was the runt.

If the window if fogged up you can cover it with a towel and it won't condense as much. The temp difference between the room temp and the incubator temp is making the window fog up.

I have trouble sleeping and was up at 4am anyway, I had 2 temp. drops during incubation, I think it slowed them down. I'm glad I didn't kill them.

Thanks, I'll try that now. How long do you think I should wait to remove chicks. the first is almost 24hrs but I have one that has started to zip and one that hasn't done anything?

If the brooder is warm I'd throw them in. I couldn't bear to watch the chicks struggling around in my incubator so I took them out after they dried off a little. They seemed much happier under the dry warm light than in the sweaty inc. Next design needs a softer floor. I am thinking plastic mesh like the kind used for counted cross stitch. Hardware cloth looked too rough on the little pink skinned peeps. I bumped the temp up in the brooder almost 100 df and they stopped huddling. Banties are so tiny I guess they needed a little more heat. I shoot the floor with an infrared gun and dial the temp in with a dimmer in line with the bulb.
