Thought it might be fun to keep track of our chicks from the October hatch-a-long.
Anyone else is also welcome to join in.šŸ™‚

I currently have 22 chicks from my 4 October hatches. Ages range from
6 days of age (11) to 4 weeks (1).
Many of these chicks are for sale, some are keepers. Planning to ā€œgrow outā€œ many of them to choose for future breeding projects.
All are Silkies except for two that are Silkie/Cochin crosses, eggs that were inadvertently set to hatch.

The ā€œmobā€.
Had them out in the grass for the first time and I sat down in the grass and they all came down and sat next to me. They are all so sweet!

Kept her as she is the only dominant white I hatched from my two test hatches and also because she was quite the ugly duckling at hatch and nobody wanted to buy her. Sheā€™s actually turning out quite nice. She had completely pink skin at hatch, including beak and toes and now these have turned black and you would never know that she is dominant white by looking at her now.šŸ˜Š

This is the visually impaired check. Sheā€™s doing great. She was also funny looking at hatch. Very tiny and not the typical fluff nugget!šŸ¤£

These are the rest of the chicks from the shipped eggs from 10/14. Didnā€™t have the energy today to do individual photo shoots.šŸ˜œ
The rest of the mob is pictured, too.

And these are Laylaā€™s super fluff nuggets at six days old. They were in a plastic tub while I was cleaning the brooder. They are all super gorgeous chicks: great bearding, perfect feet and combs. Nicest looking hatch Iā€™ve gotten thIs year. Layla is definitely staying in my breeding program!šŸ„°

I've got 13 chicks in my brooder, hatched on Oct. 9 and thus 3 weeks old today.

I will have them out for individual photos on my day off on Tuesday, but here are a couple long-distance group photos.

Alas, my hens deceived me. Instead of being pure Australorps, 4 of them are half Cochin and 3 have rose combs. The Cochin shouldn't have been laying because she was in a heavy molt and the only rose-combed bird in the flock is a pullet I hadn't thought was laying yet.

So only 6 keepers. The crossbreeds are for sale: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/fall-chicks-in-central-north-carolina.1552734/

I can see some serious combs already. I should be able to ID my boys with reasonable confidence by Tuesday.

Fun! I love watching chicks grow up! I had 3 hatch on Oct 21/22nd. The are just over a week old and starting to get their feathers ;) looking like some interesting colors! They are from the same farm as my July hatch which gave me 2 EE and 1 OE. One of these chicks has really orange legs! The other two have the green/slate legs

Can't wait to hear how they're doing! :D

Also, I like the name Himawari!
Thanks! My daughter names the chickens and sheā€™s in a Japanese/anime phase.šŸ˜Š
It means Sunflower.šŸŒ»

Well the broody attempt was a fail. This morning the babies were in one corner and Himawari was in the other corner and she kept pecking them and would not let them eat. Decided just to put them back in the little brooder where they are happily eating making content sounds. Himawari is back out, at least she got a bath out of it.šŸ¤£

@LadiesAndJane they are all so beautiful!!! Man Wren is precious to he a cochin/silkie!!!
And the little Beatrix is a boy!?! Awe! Bellatrix! I LUV HIM!
Iris and Paloma...hum I think their parents had a side thang going on LOLOL. They sure are similar!!!
Wren is a female. Interestingly she didnā€™t get any red from her mama, Hanabi.

Pretty sure Bellatrix is female as well. Because she canā€™t see very well sheā€™s not really scared of anything and is such a little sweetie. When we were trying to get individual photos of each chick most of them were trying to run back to the others and did not like being separated. Bellatrix just decided to stay exactly where she was placed and lay in the sun, it was hard to get a standing photo. She kept wanting to sun bathe!šŸ¤£

Agree Paloma and Iris look very similar in coloring, though while Paloma is lavender based, Iris appears to be blue based. Iris is also quite a bit bigger than Paloma and has a single comb. I have sent updated photos to the breeder, and she still is not sure where this chick came from!šŸ¤£
Hoping to sell Bellatrix and Iris together to a pet home where theyā€™ll get lots of love and attention. Iris is also super friendly!šŸ„°
