A small amount of smudging in the tail, rest just look like wide dark bars.

I wouldn't doubt that there maybe some super smudgy Barred Rocks, I just never had any.

She was! She had perfect Silkie feathering and black skin, so I’m not sure what she was crossed with

Silkies can actually have no crest, & a single comb. If you got her from a hatchery, it can happen.
